Reports for 2003

**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.

September 2000
Each month as we get closer to the fall blitz season, things are progressing. The end of August was very interesting, good numbers of stripers right in the wash and a fair showing of albacore, bonito, and Spanish mackerel. The fluke fishing, even at night for guys throwing plugs and teasers, has been outstanding. I've seen a number of 16-20" fluke at night eat bomber, teasers, Yo-zuris and other plugs. The fishing, as of now, should be considered worth while. Plugging anywhere at any tide from the beach should yield stripers, blues, weaks, and fluke! Small plugs, lighter rods, and be prepared to fish very shallow white water, you'll find 'em! Soon, the daytime bite will heat up as the peanut bunker are well spread out! Good luck, check out SurfTalk for more details!

Both Paul and I had the day off so we decided to head on down to Jersey to see if we could get into some fish. My very first cast was rewarded with slam. That was a first for me! Fish took a blue over white deceiver. For the first hour or so almost every cast resulted in a hit. We got three of them on teasers and one on a black backed crystal minnow. All bass. No blues to be found. What a blast!

Lots of fish around. All of the other people were either carrying fish back to the car or just smiling. One older gentlemen was dragging a brute of a fish in the sand.

We'll be back very soon :)

Had some time to kill on Sunday and hit the beach to see if anyting was up. Just started casting and noticed that about 50 yds to my left, a nice rip out from the shore break. Started walking to it and the peanut bunker just started coming out of the water with swirls under them. Cast into the middle of the action and hooked up immediately. Had an awesome time and not another fisherman near me. I would have caught more, but the stripers straightened out the split rings on my freshwater bait. All fish released. After the hooks were gone from my lure, I just kept casting into the feeding stripers and would feel them hammer the bait. One actually held on all the way to the wash until he realized that all he had to do to get away was open his mouth. They were there for about an hour and gone. It was a great afternoon.

I got a good look at her before she shook off and waved her tail good bye... probably in the 30 inch range. The two I landed were caught on the olive/yellow deciever teaser on a 2/0 hook.

Decided to give it a go even though it was extremely late. Real low water at the start and had a fish almost immediately on the chartreuse/white 1/0 teaser. Lots of bait bumping into my boots with the deeper waves...only mullet usually do this hard enough to feel it. Got one more fish a little later, ate a Mambo minnow...missed a couple hits on MegaBaits and the deadly Delta Sword. The anticipation and expectations far exceeded the actual action...but we did get to watch a ravenous pack of stripers rolling in the mullet for about 15 minutes...I always like that kinda stuff in the middle of the night, no seagulls or binoculars to give away the action...you'd have to be there to see it! ;-) Things are heating up... the wind was a killer last night, belly in the braid that would scare ya!

Recent reports: Friday night I had 5 stripers, 3 over 30", 2 of those over 32". Saturday night, 5 again, only 2 over 30"...one of them substantially over 30" but came unbuttoned while laying on the sand and we sent seaward before I could stick a thumb in her mouth...she was gonna go back anyway! All fish were released unharmed ;-) Well, all of them except the 19 1/2" fluke...that one's gonna be the only fish I'll eat outta the surf this year.

Beautiful afternoon for a walk on the beach. Alot of different bait in the wash, mullet, rainfish and spearing everywhere, small clouds of peanuts working their way south, even some large (about 6 inches) sand eels zipping around. One of those afternoons you feel something is going to happen any minute so you can't leave. It never happened for me. Lots of fluke, nothing else. I am sure the armada of boats pounding fluke just off the beach didn't help. Several fellas told me a just missed a mini-blitz of bass feeding on rainfish at about 3:00.

Kind of slow pickings this AM, but the one fish I did catch made the trip worthwhile... Blame it on the flat seas. Loads of bait in the wash, definitely mullet, and also thought I saw sand eels! Just as first light was hinting in the eastern sky, I had a couple of bumps and noticed the bait was gettin pretty nervous, then Wham! Thought I hooked a VW Microbus. Line flying off the spool, fish heading in generally an easterly direction.... Thank God the fish went east and not South.... lots of structure in that direction... Finally stopped running, now she's not budging. 12 lb test mono screaming as I lay into the fish... at last, some slow movement inshore.. after some wrestling and splashing and generally unhappy behaviour on behalf of the fish, I drag in a nice fat 36 inch linesides.... remove the Baby Striper colored 6" bomber from her mouth, and gently let her go! See ya next time!

Water couldn't have been more than 18" deep. Finally I know what the big deal is with Striped Bass - these are great looking fish! Three shorts probably seems silly to most guys but they all looked like whales to me. Tried not to hurt them by keeping them in the water getting the hook out - the littlest one put me right on my rear in the waves! Never fell so hard for anything as this sport since that beautiful night...

Just too many fish coming un buttoned lately! The only thing I can think of is poor hooksets!

Started fishing around 4:00am had a nice hit using a mambo minnow. Walked down the beach some and had another fish slam a 4 1/2 mega bait. After that I couldnt buy a bite, my father was catching weakfish on a jetty, the sun started to rise and I was about to join him when I thought to my self "let me just try a smillin bill" so I snap it on, and make a cast I wasnt paying attention and the rod was nearly pulled out of my grasp! I try setting the hook, but the fish is taking a lot of line (and my drag was very tight!) so by the time I can cup my hand over the spool the fish makes a gargantuine splash pulls one more time and is gone. I was about to cry but there was to many people around. Fun none the less, I will be out next week in search of that heart breaker!

Nailed a feisty little striper on a sandeel style teaser. My Father caught a blue and some shad, the I lent him my silicone spearing and he caught a slot sized fish. A lot of fun, nice weather, and even saw some skinny dippers! Get out there guys!
