Reports for 2003
**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.
October 2000
September was pretty good locally, we caught a good
number of fish in the upper average size for our area, 12-15#'s. It does
seem the pelagics weren't as cooperative as it appeared they'd first
be...but that's ok, they don't bite at night anyway! ;-) October started off
very good with the bunker herds getting molested daily, just have to be in
the right spot at the right time...but then again, isn't that what fishing
is all about? The right spot is anywhere the peanuts are...which is just
about anywhere along the coast and inside each bay and river right now. The
'nuts should be moving out so expect a lessening of action inside and more
on the outside. Never neglect inlets and places with good current, these
things will hold bass longer than the average open beach. Look for the
monster blues to begin making appearance surf-side soon...keep all yer good
lures locked up tight when you start to see those 15# plug gators ripping
through the bait! Good luck, check out
SurfTalk
for more details!
Striper Addict(s): not ideal conditions for boating but great for the fish....Only two other
boats out there and I think we were staying in sight of each other "just in
case"...TONS of birds! Fish feeding on those peanut bunker that just are
dying to be eaten. Not exactly easy fishing, It took us an hour to pick up
what we had. We are using bass and bluefish at the Sandy Hook Marine lab for
experiments...I hate being paid to catch fish!!!! Striper Addict(s): not ideal conditions for boating but great for the fish....Only two other

all day down the shoreline. I was into the remaining last two hours of
consistent fishing. The guys in the trucks were fishin and driven, fishin
and driven. Sometimes I wonder.
The Slammers were keepin the bait movin pretty fast. The BASS seemed to just
follow around and pick up straggler bait.
Speaking of how much I like MEGA-BAIT lures. There was a conversation regarding
the durability of the Split-Rings. Forget the Split-Rings, the whole end hook
assembly tore right out of the plug on a rather LARGE. I never saw the fish,
only felt the turn he made and the release of the plug. Was greatful that the
tackle shop just replaced it. Never had a plug do that befoe, hooks maybe, but
not the whole assembly pop out like that. Hmmm....
While I was walking in the shallows from South to North. I was casting out
@25-30 yards, didn't have to, I almost stepped on a LARGE hovering in the
shallows, nose pointing NORTH just waiting to pounce on a bait. Had to be about
25-30lbs, maybe he was the one that broke me off earlier, can only guess. The
water was only 1 to 2 foot deep in spots. Interesting that such a LARGE would be
there like that, just waiting.
When he saw me, he took off SOUTH. Striper Addict(s): Craig Made the trip to Harkers last weekend and fought the north winds on Fri
and Sat. Scratched out a few albies and caught a lot of small blues. Then
the cold front came in on Saturday night and we killed the ablies on Sunday.
Before the wind laid down, we cast the small megabaits to breaking fish and
WOW did they like it. One 12# fish ran close to 200 yds off my Penn 965.
Once the wind laid down, we moved around and cast to breaking fish all by
ourselves and murdered them. If you like to fish for albies, Cape Lookout in
late Oct and Nov is Mecca. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. Made plans with Mark M. who contacted me thru this site to beat up on the
stripes this morn. but it was'nt meant to be.It was the nasties conditions I
have ever tried to fish at this spot. I had 1 vicious strike early on the
black bomber, but that was it for the Morn. Never saw the nuts or the BASS
that have been there for the past 2-weeks.I tried to stick it out long
enough just to sting one as not to put the jinz on my spot, but at this point
the spray coming off the rocks was like a heavy rain. I guess my old streak
is over and it's time to start a new one. Tight lines Jim B. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. AAAGGGHHH, The VAMPIRE STRIPERS are making me nuts. Took my 10 year old
daughter with me this morn. for her first time dark-dawn plugging. She was
having trouble getting used to her reel in the dark so when I hooked up my
first fish I passed the pole to her.In her enthusiasm she dragged a nice 32
In. Bass into the rock jumble at the tip of the jetty. It was well hooked
and tangled with the rocks. SUPER-DAD decided to go get her prize. Needless
to say the corkers slipped and I went swimming. So much for my headlight,
cell-phone, camera and wallet. We then taped and released her fish and went
back to it. The nuts were so thick we were snagging them on almost every
cast and the BASS were there feeding in a frenzy. At this point the sun was
up and we could'nt buy a strike with anything, including all the new toys I
bought for these ungratfull fish. Looks like I will bring live-lining gear
tomorrow. Good Luck Jim B. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. Foggy as hell, Went anyway. Got to my BASS spot and first cast with a
black bomber was clobbered by a decent blue. I could'nt see him but by the
tail-dancing and jumps I just knew.The razor-lips were so thick I could'nt
get down thru them for the BASS I knew were there. After sustaining some
serious damage to my plug inventory I threw on a old piece of junk and belly
hooked the small BASS./ p.s. Thanks to all who E-Mailed me with suggestions
about my VAMPIRE STRIPERS-[only bite in the dark] I will try all of them.
Also sorry about the report page. My computer Hic-cupped while writing it
and the result was 5 blank posts. Good Luck Jim B. Striper Addict(s): Hman Started throwing plugs. Lot's of jelly fish. Changed to clams. Decided to
rig a light 6'6" ugly stick just for the hell of it. Of course that was the
lucky rod. After a few fun and nervous minutes, the fish was landed. It was
a beautiful speciman. Nothing else except for two Sea robins and one ugly
Star Gazer. A guy next to me caught one of the ugliest Stripers I've ever
seen, the bottom of it's tail was worn or chopped off and it was covered
with these little bugs. Looked like Sand Fleas. Striper Addict(s): Phil 4s fished for about 10 min and hooked a nice 3 lb Tog. Threw out again and
had a monster hit. Fought it for about 1/2 hr and finally got it over the
bar and on the beach. The line broke just as I was reaching down in about
10" of water. Needless to say I ran my hand in the gill and tackled that
beauty. Had it weighed for the Atlantic County derby (first so far) Life is
good. Phil Striper Addict(s): Rich G AKA Hardy Smokin day on the boat. Fish were chowing down on poppers like there was
no tommorrow. My big girl had an obvious hook hole in the side of her mouth.
To whoever caught her and let her go the first time around, thanks, and be
advised she was let go to be caught another day. catch and release works! Striper Addict(s): Jim B. Hit my spot in the dark and caught the 29 after about 15 Min. of plugging
on a all black bomber. I switched over to a soft yellow bomber as the sky
lightened up and got a bump that I missed. A few min. later caught the 27.
NOW I AM LOOKING FOR ADVICE, PLEASE E-MAIL ME IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE
ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION. Every morn. when I hit this spot I score very well
for about a hour and a half using dark plugs or poppers in the dark and
switching to soft yellow as the sky lightens up to chrome at full light. The
fish are still there feeding on nuts and spearing for another hour but I
cant get them to take on anything. I have tried Tin, Bucktails, fin-s and
everything artificial Known to man. Other than live-lining a nut, does
anyone have a suggestion on what may work? I think it is a visibility issue,
with the BASS seeing something unnatural, I also use fluorocarbon leaders.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks Jim B. Striper Addict(s): Sport Fished North Beach to the Rip. Nada. Boats working birds just off the
beach. No fish seen taken by others fishing. Nice evening but no fish - no
bait in the surf. Striper Addict(s): RayJay Saturday morning small blues and nice size BASS.
Sunday afternoon, SLAMMER blues. Time to hang up the stinky 450 PENN. The larger
fish wreaked havoc on the darn reel. Without a doubt, for the next five weeks,
the heavier gear needs to be taken down off the wall . Striper Addict(s): RayJay Saturday morning was a great day. My wrist is still reeling. At first
light, peanuts all over and a good mix of fish were in them. First couple of
casts, a beautiful BASS. Every cast for the next half hour, 2lb blues. They
went East a while, in the lull another BASS about 8 lbs. The blues came
roaring back, in the midst another 2 SCHOOLIES.
Sunday afternoon, what great conditions. Super clean water, rough, and a NE
blowing. Throw out the Yellow Mega-Bait my mind is saying, so I do. Lucky third
cast, the slammers are in the troughs. They were peeling off line as if the
could care less that they were stuck. They wreaked havoc on my stinky 450 PENN.
I've got to hang it on the wall. Time to move up to my heavier gear. It has been
waiting patiently on my garage wall. Now is the time. These next FIVE weeks are
wonderful. Striper Addict(s): JimK Found 'em hiding at an inside spot I'd not previously visited. I fished
all by myself, except for the company of a few thousand peanut bunkers and a
bunch of bass, some of which looked rather large! First I started in one of
my usual haunts, but it was lifeless. I noticed some birds working quite a
bit up from where I was and decided to hoof it. It was worth the walk. Found
some nice swirls mixing up the nuts and casted in that general direction.
First cast, a decent 22 incher. Next cast, 24 inches. A few cast's later, 35
inches... Things slow a bit, then I notice the party has moved about 300
yards to my right.. well, who am I not to join in. Still alone, except for
the fishes. Now I see some serious LARGE blasting into the pod of nuts.
These fish are much more finicky (guess that's how they got so large) I
manage one more of about 20 inches or so. All of the fish I got were on the
teaser: Olive/Yellow deceiver. When things seemed to slow for a bit, I
switched to a rattle trap and got nailed.. It felt like another good fish, I
was fighting it for about a minute then it pulled off.. Upon retreival of
the plug I noticed it was marked with some serious teeth marks.. Just as
well the Razor Lips pulled off! It was nice to get them during the day for a
change! I still prefer the mystery of the dark, but the visual of fish that
looked to go close to 40 inches crashing into schools of nuts will be
emblazened in my thoughts for quite a while! Striper Addict(s): JimK Kind of slow this morning, but surf looked like it was getting to be just
about right. Mangaged one before there was any light in the sky. That was
it. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. Had planned to go out on a buddys boat, got to the ramp at 5:45 am just
as they were issuing a small craft advisary. We walked up to the bay and saw
3 Ft. rollers and decided not to get beat up in his 19 FT. W/A. We returned
the boat to his house and headed to one of my surf spots. I had 2 fish come
unbuttoned????? before catching my 26 In. bass and then the bite died at its
usuall time. Good luck Jim Striper Addict(s): Jim B. I got out for the first time since last Fri. night this morning before
work. I wasent to hopefull with the tide stage, but gave it a shot.It payed
off!!!! I caught a nice FAT 38 IN. , and a little rat of about 9in. The
bigun gave a nice fight of 3 solid blistering runs against my 12# spin
outfit. Go get em. Jim B. Striper Addict(s): icytoes Fished the tip again, somewhat tougher conditions this time around. The
lures that worked were whatever could get out past the beach wash and into
the rip. Striper Addict(s): icytoes I just returned from Sandy Hook, and I would highly recommend getting in
some fishing ASAP. LOTS of fish out front and in the rip. Lost count of
fish, probably landed over 30. Lots of shorts, a dozen over 10 lb., a half
doz around 15. Lost 2 that were MUCH, MUCH bigger. Go get 'em!!! Striper Addict(s): hcw There was a nice little flurry of bass at false dawn, everyone caught a
bass or two, as sun came up it quckly ended as the peanuts moved off.
Beautiful morning Striper Addict(s): RayJay It was a gorgeous morning weather-wise. Full-Moon behind me, starlight
above, I thought for sure I was in paradise. Started casting and I went
through the whole assortment. Not a bump. As time passed, I saw a pod o'nuts
in the trough at about 7 am. So, I decided to switch to the treble hook and
snag one. Sure enough, in just a few minutes, I started catching BASS.
Granted, they were only 5 to 8 pounders but they were BASS. Must be the
crystal clarity of the water is making them zone in on live bait. I had fish
on my line, I was happy. Striper Addict(s): Bob E Fished out front without so much as a bump, moved back to the inlet and
picked up 8 small blues. Beautiful day, not many large fish around......yet! Striper Addict(s): Ben Decided to take a ride with the wife down from PA to do a little fishing.
Got to Keansburg at 5 to find bait busting allover the place. Threw
everything but nada then finally got an explosion on the popper nice fish
good fight, but that was it. Even tried the snag and sink method nada. But
got to see a striper jump straight out of the water 3 feet and land smack
down on the vait what a sight. Striper Addict(s): RichG AKA Hardy Gorgeous day out on the boat. we found schools of bass blasting peanuts
on the surface. Schools of nuts were scattered, and it was "run and gun" all
day. You'd get maybe one bass per pack and then it was time to move on. We
had the awesome experience of being surrounded by peanuts as bass ravaged
them. it was wild seeing the nuts try to hide under the boat, and the bass
were literally banging into the boat trying to get at them. If those
&^#@&(^%! reduction boats would just stay away, we'd have us an awesome
fall. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. Anchored up at our spot, and immedialey started catghing shorts. Action
was fast and steady the entire time, even when the tide went slack. It was a
fun night but still waiting for some LARGE. Good Luck Jim Striper Addict(s): thebionic Got the shorts in the dark , o/w deceiver. Albies did not show till
change of the tide, water started going out the fish went on a bite for
about 2 hours in small groups. Striper Addict(s): animal60/Djjc Slow constant pick over 3+ miles of sand. Bass just got progressively
bigger as tide came in. Just started using fireline and it has made a
difference. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. It was one of the most perfect nights to fish except that nobody told the
fish. I saw no bait, no fish, and everybody I ran into said the same thing.
WHERE ARE THE STRIPERS??? Tight lines Jim Striper Addict(s): HCW Fished the same nearly the same tide stage and time of ady at the same
place I clobbered them on Monday. No peanuts anywhere, a few small spearing
enjoying the company of my feet, no bass. Not even a bump. Maybe the drop in
water temps. coupled with tomorroes full moon has the nuts moving. Striper Addict(s): Bob E Got a late start but wanted to enjoy the beautiful fall day. Saw lots of
schools of fish about a quarter of a mile off the beach. Ocassional school
would come in and the bait fish pushed up tight to the beach. Had 1 fish
caught on a mega bite after about 10,000 cast into a flat surf! Just prior
to leaving a small group of bass were breaking 20' in front of me and were
not interested in my schoolbus bomber! Toss it right in the mix and not so
much as a bump! Striper Addict(s): thebionic Albies in and out acoulpe of good pods. Got 2 fish quick then it slowed
down, over by 10:30. Striper Addict(s): DaveK Started in the cold dark tossing bomber and teaser for a 1/2 hour waiting
for my fishing partner, Frank to wake up. Picked him up and headed north,
had a few bumps just before dawn, saw a few swirls. Moved back down south as
the tide was starting to drop. Fished some real nice water, but I think most
fish are still a little north. Saw sand eels burying themselves in the sand
so tossed the lure just off shore of them and had one take the teaser. Had a
few more bumps but no hook ups. I was happy to break a long skunk streak. Striper Addict(s): hcw First daytime blitz for me this year. The thumb is raw and red. Peanuts
were trapped by tide and current all afternoon. Bass were just rolling over
in the poor peanuts. Fished rattletraps and caught bunch, as did the three
guys fishing around me. Kept snagging peanut bunker after two or three
cranks so I started live lining peanuts on a treble hooh I canniblized from
a big bomber with just a split shot, had a hit at least every ten minutes.
Saw a fella catch a monster bluefish on a bomber, but the stripers would not
hit it. As the sun set got to witness the very LARGE roll, cartwheel and
somersalt in the nuts out of range. Lots of fun but chilly in hard N wind. Striper Addict(s): JimK Bass were off the shore a bit until first light. I did catch 2 in the
total darkness, but they were a long cast off. As sky lightened, Bass pushed
peanuts right up to my feet. Lots of action as peanuts were flying. I saw a
couple of swirls that looked like they might qualify as "LARGE". I caught
the fish on all of the plugs/teasers/plastics mentioned above.
JimK Striper Addict(s): BrianZ fished pretty much the same area all weekend. fish were mainly in the
cuts. some around jetties, lost a couple nice ones all bass were 20 -27", no
real bait to speak of just some spearing here and there. Striper Addict(s): Birds everywhere right up to the edge of the beach, clouds of bait so
thick you could pick it up with your hands. Fish were around ALL DAY
hopefully they get a little bigger in the next few weeks. There was no need
to chase the birds the fish were so thick, tried fishing between birds for
bass but none to be had today, maybe tommorow? Striper Addict(s): IsmailG Had a hunch about a certain spot, 3rd cast had a nice little striper eat
my teaser about 10ft away from me. Then that was it until my last cast, had
most likeley a nice fluke bend mny rod for a second then let go. Striper Addict(s): Jim B. Took my brother in law and wifes cousin from PA. to one of my favorate
spots to try to get him a striper. He is still virgin. We each carryied 2
poles, one for pluggin and 1 for bait to better our odds. Upon ariving as I
was baiting up the three poles my brother in law started tossing a mag
darter. I questioned him if this was going to be a race to the first fish
and the contest was on. My very first cast with a green and yellow swimming
plug was engulfed by the 5# blue as soon as it hit the water! Contest
over!!! After throwing everything else in the plug bag with no results,my
wifes cousin caught the 2# blue on a clam bait on the bottom. That was it for
the night as the newby was getting cold. Tight lines Jim Striper Addict(s): thebionic Bass and blues cutting and slashing threw the baits, got the fish with
slow pops and stop very presistent.3 on the bottle 3 on yellow and white
Bob's Banger. The fish would ball the bunker then crash into them. Fish kept
coming in and out , some of the blues were slammers 10-15lbs. The bass I got
were shorts up to 24" some breaks looked like nicer fish. Striper Addict(s): RayJay I was walking South and fishing the trough, not a bite. A fisherman walks
right by me, as if he knows exactly where he's going and stops about 100
yards ahead of me and starts casting. I've been throwing just about all I
had in the bag, but not the Black. I usually keep that for darkness, and it
was getting light out so why bother. Well, I see this guy's rod bend on the
first cast. I walk past him, see that he has the Black on, so I go for it.
Duh! Two casts later, a 13 pounder. Waves were intense but I got him to
shore. About 5 minutes go by, the lure gets smacked, and I mean smacked.
Line starts peeling South-East. With the waves and current so intense, I had
to turn a few on the drag to keep him from peeling my line empty. It worked
he turned around. But that didn't mean he was coming in. He just stops. He
must have been broadside to the beach. My pole is bent in half. There's no
line being taken by him. He is just sitting there. This goes on for what
seems an eternity. Finally, he starts heading North. I start to gain some
line on him. He was a great fighter. Twenty-four pounds of one of cleanest
looking Bass I've caught. It was an honor to fight him. I placed back into
the water for you guys, so get out there find him. He is one hell-of-a-fish.
The other fish caught that morning, after him, are not worth mentioning. Striper Addict(s): thebionic Bass and blues some slammers crashing into the bunker! Look for the
first really good push of bunker out of the bay very soon the water was very
cool could feel it against my legs. Trouble getting hooked up on anything
but live ones. Precise bunker fleyes may do the trick, getting under the
bait is a tough one because the bunkers are so thick in the shallow water
where they get pushed in only 2-4ft of water. There is a tremendous amount
of bunker all over the southshore of the bay. Striper Addict(s): BrianZ for the weekend i hooked 24 fish and all i landed was the above
mentioned. i lost 3 very nice bass in the wash when a wave would break on
them. it wasn't easy fishing but it was still very enjoyable. Copyright
