Reports for 2003

**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.

May, 2000
...
Things are certainly looking up as we enter the historic beginning of LARGE things in our small portion of the striper coast! The water temperatures have been lower than normal, but just 2 sunny days recently have turned all that around! The suds went over 50 degrees for the first time this year...the rivers and bays are 5-10 degrees warmer...things are certainly going to start cooking this month! April was a little slower than normal...or maybe it was just different, hard to tell...but May is certainly going to be a great month for hunting our striped friends!

Walked from North Beach around the tip. Tried everything in my bag, no hits. Surf was really rough until I got around the tip.

Moved to the Navesink. Saw fish breaking right in front of me. Tried for 1/2 hour to get them to hit. Nothing. Finally got hits three casts in a row and whiffed on each one. Almost threw my rod into the river. Got frustrated and went home.

1st flyfishing excursion in the surf and I caught my first striper on the flyrod! Hoofed it from North Beach to Bug Light and back. The wind made the rips practically unflyfishable, Bug Light was much calmer but the tide was slack low by the time I got there. Walked back to North Beach as the tide was coming back in. Should have stayed on the oceanside where my bass was caught right in the wash. Can't wait to do it again!

Caught the skunk, but fish were around. First stop fished up the river till first light, heard plenty of pops and splashes, even saw some fish as light began to filter in... but they all stayed just out of reach of my casting range. Next stop, Sandy Hook surf side.... saw a couple of small blues within range as sky brightened, but could not tempt them to the fly... bait guys were scoring on small blues, loads of sea robins and one bass of about 26 inches.... looked like clams were key. Next stop, Monmouth Beach.... sun up by now... Loads of boats from in tight to the beach to about 1 mi out. I had no action here and did not see any signs of life. The boats up close were not scoring either...

Wow! What a night. Hit one of my favorite spots back in the bay on the NY side and immediately got into fish @8pm. We never went more than 10 or so minutes without one of us hooking up, and we often had all 3 of us on fish at the same time. Here are the numbers:--the 3 of us got 24(only one short) bass up to 26#, countless blues up to 14#, and one 8# weakie while chunking. ALL of the bass(except for one 27" fish) were between 15-18# with 4 topping 20#. We each kept one of our earlier, non-revivable fish, 20#, 21#, 17#, eagerly to be devoured on the grill.

Very, very cool trip out last night... LOADS of spearing forced out of hiding as tide receded. The spearing were greeted by swirling bass. I landed only one, but for this particular spot that's good for me. The fish are generally finicky here and the bright full moon only made it tougher!

I'm sure there were some LARGE around as I heard the infamous sound of a five gallon bucket being swooshed through the water more than once!

Very nice night!

started on flynns knoll immediatly got a striper on a KILLIE? (fluke fishing). Threw out a few FIN-S on shad heads and picked up 6 more rockfish for a total of 7, 2 were of keeper status. Then razor lips moved in and the stripers were gone. Caught quite a few blues, nothing real big. Then I finished up the day with a nice fat 5 1/2# weakfish at the buglight area. It was great to wet a line can't wait to go again.

Spent 3 days fishing Cape May jetties. Weakies at Cape May Point would show in spurts - all of a sudden 3-4 fish would be caught, then nothing for 30 minutes. Short stripers taken on the ocean side on bucktails and Fin-s. One nice blue came up minus part of his tail where his buddy had chomped him during the fight. Great weekend, great to feel the pull of a decent fish on the rod again.

Fisr stop produced non-stop action--couldn't even put the rod down. If you got thru the blues(brutes up to 16#), you got bass. The blues even took the bunker heads! After that 2 hr spurt died down, it got slow for awhile. Our last stop produced something I had never seen before--a weakfish frenzy on bunker chunks. Regretting I did not listen to a friend and bring the apporpriate gear(I decided last minute just to concentrate on the guys with stripers), we onlt managed to land a few without the hooks pulling on their delicate mouths. We dropped some by the boat that were EASILY over 10#(they even took bunker heads too!).

I also dropped 2 fish earlier that night on bunker heads that I beleive would've have been gigantic sized LARGE! :(

Some fish breaks heard after dark in the shallows, but nothing spectacular. Perhaps the suds will be a new destination.

I started the evening by watching a terrific display of lighting over the surf at Fishing Beach for an hour. Around 9:30 the storm moved off shore and I hit three spots along the river between the Hook and Sea Bright. No runs, no hits, no errors (well with fish anyway). I did note at least some activity at all three spots though. There were some bunker around and some smaller bait (spearing?) with the occassional fish breaking especailly around slack tide. I'll try it again on Friday work permitting. BTW - Mother Nature never ceases to amaze me. At 9:00 the wind was howling, rain pelting, and lightning crashing. By 10:00 is was dead calm on the river and casting was easy.

This was my first time using the long rod in almost 20 years. Tough wind, weeds and a rusty arm on made it difficult to get into a groove early on. Moved around and changed flies about a dozen times. Several casts after putting the silicone spearing back on, I hooked the first weakfish. Thought it wouldnt take long to bring it in--boy was I wrong. Not one gave up easily. They ran shallow and jumped and swirled. They ran deep and skulked on the bottom. They ran away from me and they charged me.

The trip was a nice re-introduction to the long rod and I scored one of my best nights ever. Hope I didn't use up all of my luck in the first shot.

Second spot, again, loads of spearing! More fish popping, but not as many as I've seen on the outgoing. Had one quickly hit and shake off on a Silicone Spearing... That was hit. Had to call it an evening..

This is how it went down:

Left Atlantic Highlands at 6:30 and headed toward Flynns Knoll. On the way we stopped on a school of surfacing bunker to check for bass. Ended up snagging one bunker only to later sacrafice half to a demon bluefish. ENded up hitting a proven spot on the Knoll and setting up to chunk some bass. We had constant action with a mix of both bass and blues and even 1 fluke on the chunk. Once the tide slowed, we moved to the bug light where we picked 3 more keeper fluke on three drifts all on sandworms. The sea robins loved the killie squid combo. All in all a good trip with consistent action all day. I was chunking slightly heavier than normal to maintain the action since I had a guy on the boat who doesn't get out that often and I wanted to make sure we caught fish. Less chunks may have = more BASS.... Good Luck!! Scott

Weather conditions were perfect, very light SW wind, outgoing tide, bunker but the larger fish we have been watching were not present. Managed to pick a few small stripers on the fly, nothing impressive but very enjoyable:)

**Tim's Note ;^) - Actually, Charlie scored the two aforementioned unicorns...I was blanked, consoled only in the fact that I stuck and lost a nice fish. The fish hit a slab fly as I was stripping it in to cast again....so I never got to bury the hook. Instead, the fish freaked out on the surface, ran out and to my right...then as I got it near me, the hook just fell out and I was left with some stirred up water, a folded over 4/0 hooks point, and a skunk for the hour and half we fished! Nice morning however...

Move out day at my daughter's college gave me the oppurtunity to take a day. The morning bite did not produce but went back in the evening. The striper picked up the jig after a larger drag puller had shaken it. The weakies were prime and strong on light tackle. Had one clean cutoff, there were some blues around. The fluke took the same lure. It was a great evening but I'm rusty. Only downside is a two hour ride home.

Started out with the fly rod. Nothing doin. Tried to stretch my line, and proceeded to snap it. Over to spinning gear....lots of junk in the water, weeds on just about every cast. Went all the way back to where I started in the morning, and a big school of spoon-eating blues showed up. Yes, I admit it, I caught blues and enjoyed it. After a long winter and four straight skunkings in Y2K, it felt good to have fish on again. By dark, the blues had quit, and the bass were probabl lurking; however, my back was sore from 10 hours of fishing and I went for pizza & beer.

The 16 incher put up a respectable fight for her size. the 22er was caught right at the bank, maybe 10 yrds. away. Quiet night at the canal, but the fish are there!, also a seal caught me unawares and scared the **** out of me when it barked about 20 ft. from me.

They were still biting, but once the wind started to blow we couldn't connect with the bottom with 8 ounces. Got our butt kicked going with the waves back to the Navesink, but attempts for more bass or flounder proved futile. All in all a decent day. All shorts but fiesty bass non the less!! hit a quiet little spot I like to try now and again. Quite a few bass around! I managed one decent one to break the ice for the season, on the fly to boot! She took one of Tims size 2/0 silicon spearing. Had another come quickly unbuttoned on a 1/0 silicon spearing. I didn't see the bait that the bass were feeding on, but the bass were splashing around pretty good. I assume they were on spearing as it was the spearing imitations that accounted for my action. Psyched!
