Reports for 2003

**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.

June, 2000...Things are certainly looking up as we enter the historic beginning of LARGE things in our small portion of the striper coast! The water temperatures have been lower than normal, but just 2 sunny days recently have turned all that around! The suds went over 50 degrees for the first time this year...the rivers and bays are 5-10 degrees warmer...things are certainly going to start cooking this month! April was a little slower than normal...or maybe it was just different, hard to tell...but May is certainly going to be a great month for hunting our striped friends! May was good for some, slow for others, but that's fishing.

On Tuesday I went with a friend out to the knoll and immediately had stripers on. After the first drift we already had 3. Only had 2 dozen worms though so our fishing was limited. The stripers didn't have a lot of size but that's how it usually goes with worms. Then on Wednesday I went fluking in the shrewsbury where I caught my biggest fluke ever, 25" 6lbs. I caught it on a frozed peanut bunker I netted last year. I have quite a few bags of those left to use.

Ran out to the Knoll to get a taste of the hot clamming. There were tons of fish stacked up out there. We were doing well until 7:30 or 8 when the knucklehead action got real bad. We hung in there until 9 am but the crowds were so bad and inconsiderate that it just wasn't fun anymore. We bolted and fished some rough bottom out by the mudhole to put some ling, fluke and sea bass in the box.

Just before we left I had a big fish come unbuttoned. I was flatlining a clam on a little Loomis mag bass rod with a CT250 and 12 pound when she picked up the bait. She was not pleased and almost spooled the 250. I got about half the line back on the reel when the hook just pulled. When I got it back it still had the clam tongue on it. It was then that I realized how much I have given myself over to circle hooks. I lost that fish on a 6/0 octopus and was cursing myself for not having had a circle hook on that rig! Fish just do not come unbuttoned from a circle hook.

Started off at the southeast corner of the knoll. With intentions of putting a few fluke in the basket for the table. Got a quick fluke, then the rod with the fin-s starts screamin. Nice striper about 32", almost spooled me (should have put new line on it was low). Then my 12-year-old son gets his first ever striper, a 23" short. Then he hooks something bigger nice hard fighting 27" fish. Then things got quite for a while and then the fluke bite turned on and we put 8 nice keepers in the box and caught a few shorts. Another pod of linesiders came snooping around. Hooked 4 more nice fish my son also lost his first striper spit the fin-s back at him, bummer. Nice day to be out weather was good for a change (what’s up with that). Great day can't wait to do it again. It was very crowded on the water today. Get out there and get um!!!

The pajama puppies wouldn't take anything else but the silicone spearing (2/0), which made sense since there were loads of spearing up the creek. Got out too late to catch moving water. Fished around a creek as the water reached high slack. The action was steady with a number of missed strikes. It lasted until the moon rose, at which point the fish headed for deeper water. Bring your bug spray!

The fish were all spawned out so the 30" was only 7#. I lost around 10 fish (such is life when you are plugging for trout, the have the ejectable face), and had probably 20 more hits. They were smashing the Hellcats as the inlet was chock full of spearing. This was a very good night.

Chunked a favorite spot near the knoll fri evening. Knowing this spot only produces on an outgoing tide, the 3 of us hastily decided to get out of work early to to catch most of the outgoing around 4pm. Setting up with bunker heads, we quickly caught 10 bass up to 30# in a little more than 2 hours. After which, the bite slowed to a pick with more blues up to 5#. The 30# almost spooled me on my calcutta 400s. The spot we were fishing has a tremendously strong current and the fish, besides going beserk, knew how to use the current to its advantage. I started getting "jelly legs" after the second run started getting close to the bottom of the spool.

Bluefish: tons
Weakfish: 0
Fluke: 0

They were: up to 30#

This is how it went down:

Much better outing than friday night into saturday morning!!! I think outgoing is better than incoming right now. (Bold assumption based upon just two back to back outings!)

The spot I was in had a nice South to North rip flowing over a bar into a deep cut... I was reasonably sure that fish had to be there! First fish was the fluke. Then on the next cast the 15 incher.. inhaled a charteuse over white half & half that I was letting drift with the current over the bar and into the cut. Then nothing for about 1/2 hour. I switched to the olive over white clauser as the sun broke the horizon and 2 casts later was into a solid fish... The fish headed east and took me quickly into the backing. After a few minutes and a 30 yard stroll down the beach I wrestled a nice fat 28 incher from the suds!

Stopped at 7-eleven in Sea Bright... locked keys in car :( At least I was there as the local nightclubs closed up and I got to see lot's of nice scenery! Triple A got me back into my car and I was off to that back bay spot.. nothing there either.. WASSUP???

Started out well w/ a fish on the first cast. Normally that's a grimm harbinger, but yesterday was different. Things got real slow around the 8:00 pm low tide due to lack of water and bright sun. However, as it got dark and the tide started rolling in, the bass responded. For a about 15 minutes, there has a hit on every cast. Fish fought like maniacs-I've never seen anything like this. An 8lb bass had me thinking it was a cow the way it ripped drag off and bulldogged. The fish were HAMMERING Mega Baits, but curiously, were gently sipping the teaser. Strikes on the teaser were more like an ooze than a bang. Anyway, real nice night-warm, caught good fish to 12lbs, and today's Friday.
