Reports for 2003
**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.
August 2000
- Well, July fishing wasn't up to snuff either! It's getting tough to find
stripers in the summer from land around here and that's not normal! There
were periods when the fishing was pretty good, the weakfish and the fluke
were cooperative, so the void was filled to a degree. As August starts, we
begin to turn the corner, the striper fishing will improve from here and the
pelagics will start to show up. That means bonito, false albacore, and the
spanish mackerel. The spaniards are already here, won't be long for the rest
of them! The peanut bunker have begun to leave Raritan Bay, look for them
from Sandy Hook progressing south as fast as the fish will them go! This
could get interesting!

Missed two good hits just before false dawn. First was my fault, drag was set way too loose and I did not get a good hook set. :( Second one, fish hit pretty far off of the rocks, which is unusual for me (usually the bass seem to be hanging pretty tight to the rocks). Anyway, it was a solid hit. Felt like I snagged a tree trunk. The rod bent way, way over as i leaned into the hook set (lesson learned)..a couple of good headshakes and then it was gone....
Maybe it's time to give up my old fashioned mono ways and switch to braid... Too much stretch to set the hook on a fish that was probably 50 yards off.

Ehhh, well I can confirm that I am in a slump. Plugged my brains out from North of SR Inlet all the way to the Inlet, then the inlet itself. Nothing. But once it was day light you can see the spearing all over the place. I statred using a Solaris popper in white and some thing bent my rod for a breif moment, could have just been the popper getting pulled back by a big wave? Plenty other people fishing, didnt see one other person land a fish. My father did have some thing smash his small metal, but it let go. Oh well, I thinks I should start of south and make my way up towards the inlet as it gets more light out?

Started out in the surf, but the water was calm, the moon was still kinda bright and I lacked any confidence that I would catch anything. So before sunrise I made a move north to a favorite spot of mine. I was not disappointed. I arrived around 5:30 AM as sky was getting some light to it and found bass actively feeding on spearing. The bass were mixed in size with some smaller than I caught and some that sounded a little larger. The one I managed to fool absolutely inhaled a redfin on a very SLOOOOWWWW retrieve. Once the sun broke the horizon it was done.

Strange night. Water was perfect, but there didn't seem to be much activity. I had four very hard strikes, two on the plug, two on the eel, and missed them all. that's what you get for spacing out. One fish hit the eel hard four separate times, and never got stuck. Oh well, try again...the waning moon, cooler temps, and influx of bait should turn the fish on.

Started out just as Old Man Moon was breakin' free of the eastern horizon. There were still some decent swells from this past weekend lovely weather. The surf was a bit stained, which was a huge plus considering the bright moon. Bass were definitely on the prowl in the area I was fishing... not much in the way of surface action to give them away, but I decent action for the 2 hrs. I fished.. Managed to land two and had two others come unbuttoned! The two I landed took a 1/0 silicon spearing fished ahead of a baby striper bomber, fished very slowly and drifting with the current/waves. The other two that came unbuttoned I think were on the teaser as well. Not big fish, but fat and strong and feisty. These fish have been eating well. I suspect that the recent blow has caused the fish to turn on and move into the shallows more.

Fire in the water was brutal at the top of the tide. Fish were around but even they were glowing. When the tide went out it was better but still not good. I still managed to get some fish through it. When the fire was gone....so were the fish. Kinda makes me wish it was full moon instead of new. The 27" fish was nice, pushing 5#. They were: 29" Striper, 18"-17"-14"-12" Fluke
Found a nice hole near the bottom of the tide. Caught all of the fish except for one fluke in the hole. Plugs caught nada. FinS caught the stargazer. Tried a bunch of teasers, but a sand eel imitation was the hands down performer. The striper weighed in at 12 pounds on the berkeley digital scale. Left just before the lightning arrived and drove home in a torrential downpour. Always nice to get out in the middle of the night, this time courtesy of da wife. It was our first anniversary and she didn't have a card or a present for me--just told me to get out there and enjoy myself.

They were: Uh, like, real small
Went out for a few hours. Water had a nasty greyish-milk tinge to it. Water was full of debris-trash, grass, etc. Two silly little snappers were hanging off the Megabiat when I reeled it up. Didn't really even know there was a fish on the line, they were so small. Due to a lack of sleep the night before, I packed it in early.
