Reports for 2003
**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.
April, 2000...here we go folks, it's fishin' season! I've only been out twice,
but the many people getting out frequently are scoring...it's time, get out
there, give it a shot, and let us know how you do!

Went to a very popular Raritan Bay spot for the beginning of the outgoing with the hopes of finding a unicorn or two. Got to where I planned to fish and found 20-30 bait guys each with at least 2-3 rods set up. Needless to say not much room. Got as far away from everyone as I could and pulled out the new fly rod for the first time. Unfortunately, that didn't last long because the wind was blowing so hard my already pitiful casting was even worse. Took the fly rod back to the truck and got my plugging rod. Went back to where I was to find that someone had taken up station at where I was. So, I decided to wade through a chest deep creek to get as far away from everyone as possible. Even though I didn't catch any fish, I did see an incredible sunset though so it wasn't all that bad. I did see some bluefish and weaks caught by the bait guys right at the top of the tide.

Although nothing was stuck, the big bunkers were all over, big bass chasing the bunker right into the sod banks with some giant boils and explosions in the bunker.
Tim had one hit that left a boil that almost got me wet, I had another hit the Slab fly and it was a clean miss. The fish were stubborn but very active, shrimp are on the move and the water is at a perfect tempurature.
Heads up, there's big fish on the move so get out there.

Got down to the Hook, and was torn between fishing the bay side with lures, or throwing some bait on the ocean side. The surf was pretty nice so I decided to go with the bait. Picked up a dozen of clams. Found what looked to be a nice pool, first cast no good, second cast clam goes flying off, third cast my pole does a dance and a nice 26 incher is lying at my feet. Pull the hook out of the side of his mouth and he is back in the water to fight another day. Lost three other fish due to stupid mistakes, oh and by the way thats my first bass of the year! (wow, I bet this is the longest report for one fish ever written;))

Team L&H made another trip out last night. Not a sign of fish life anywhere. Several "Thought I had a hit" episodes, but nothing really confirmed. I tried out the art of Dubs "nesting", and will use that technique often during the year. We need a few days of warm sun to get the fish moving again. This cold rain & wind is the pits

Got to our location to find alot of boats and fish being caught.I got the first and biggest weak5-6 lb on a fins. Then the captain (Chas) hooked and lost 2 fish, one was a screamer and looked nice. Now I am in trouble he is fishing with one of my jigs, and it must be my fault for the lost fish. But most of the fish where sizable weaks I only landed 1 on half a dozen hits.Looking for a change I tied on a mega and couldn't get a nip....untill I cranked it fast....whamo bluefish. The catches where rounded out by Chas getting a nice weak 4lb and a shorti bass.Stayed too long and had a adventure filled ride home. The new marina is in Kettle creek and the area is totaly unlit....but that is another story

Not a real serious trip... more of an exploratory type thing. Fished a spot in the Union Beach area that I had scoped out in daylight conditions previously... looked fishy then and even more fishy under the blanked of night... saw some BIG spearing mulling around but that was it. Moved to another more familiar spot but at an unfamiliar tidal stage... wind increased and I stayed a while but I say no real signs of life... We need a string of pleasant days to heat things up a bit!

It was dead till 5 pm. The tide was all but out and the wind from the north must have stired things up because by 6pm I had 3 more keepers at 28 plus. Then one after the other for about an hour. working with 2 rods I had 2 fish on at the same time and asked a fellow fishermen to land it, heheheh I was too busy with yet another of my own. At days end I landed 11 keepers at 28" plus, 2 shorts and catfish, The fish were in a frenzy. I haven't seen anything like this short of a bluefish blitz.....WHAT A DAY.....I'll post the pics as soon as I get them developed. AND by the way,All the fish were released. I figured a little comic relief as I almost went fishing. This would have been the first in y2k. I was ready, honest. I gave my 1-yr old son a bottle. The general deal is I'm free to roam the night beaches if the kids settle down. Well, i give the kids the bottle, and everythings quiet. Then i hear giggling, then crying, then screaming. i hope he is just trying to settle down, but the screaming gets louder and louder. I finally go into to see he figured out how to unscrew the top off the bottle, and he dumped the contents in his crib. He's soaked, the sheets are soaked, his stuffed animals are soaked. Now my wife comes up wondering what is going on. Then she yells at me. My daughter hears this and now she wakes up. Everybody is crying. So i have to settle for a Popflies video instead of the real thing as the kids settle down.

They were: between us, we had 5 or 6 keepers...the biggest around 12#'s
We got out very late..we actually started fishing about 4:45am...we wanted to be out at midnight..but that dang rain just wouldn't ease up! :( Anyway...we were into fish immediately...they were clobbering the 6" shads on 1 1/2oz pearl heads. Missed some real arm wrenching hits...no doubt some very good fish around. The biggest 3 were between 10 and 12#. One was retained...only cause my mom decided she'd like to eat a striper...I guess she came to the right place ;^)
The odd thing was that we were bumping bunker with our braids..you can feel them react to the line...but the fish that were breaking were not doing so on bunker but on something much smaller...possibly shrimp, but I don't recall seeing too many shrimp drifting with the incoming tides in years past...just the outgoing. Oh well, mother nature has a way of teaching us new things all the times and the wise striper hunters will always keep their eyes and minds wide open!
This is going to be a very good year, the big bunkers are spread out...many where the horrible slaughtering netters cannot get to them...at least not till they exit the sanctuary they have in the backs of the rivers...till then, there just might be some very nice critters landed! Looking forward already to the next trip...tonight possibly...solo even!

Did the first trip of the year. Tried about 400 yds off of Pebble Beach @7pm, but saw no bunker or bass--did see a mob scene of shoreline anglers in the distance. Tried around Keansburg, but again found no bunker. Had to hit "the secret spot" to find the bunker, but only picked two bass of 33" and 34" (very fat) out of this area in three hours during IDEAL conditions.
On the way back into the marina, we went through what seemed like millions of bunkers near Keyport harbor--wait to the blues show up to greet them....

Fish were scattered.....hard to find. We caught fish mostly midday at some of the tried and true areas but by no means where we normally get them. My partner got the 24# on a green bomber. My largest were (2) fish at just over 20# both on a 5" Yozuri. We both had several others in the 18 and 19# range but only 9 were "keepers" (to me that's still over 28" no matter where I fish and regardless of the new regulations). Fishing was spotty at best. Still a lot of rain water in the bay. I only saw one other boat do anyithng....everyone else was scratching their heads. Some guys think fishing from a boat is easy....I say you still gotta hunt them out:).

Tonight...fishing earlier in the tide I figure on doing much better. NOTE: Herds
of folks breaking the law at the Sea Bright Bridge. I thought the police were
handing out tickets there? I guess not, I didn't even look...it looked like a
party boat. I guess once the trash and bunker heads clutter up the sidewalks
again they'll start tossing folks from the bridge. I don't mind bridge
fishing...I love to do it...but when the mess gets outta hand, it's sad. Don't
know what was going on there, but there was certainly a crowd there.

Get out there! Fish were really on those bunkers that have filled up the bay. Just walking the shoreline and blind casting around the bunkers was the ticket. Fish every 3rd or 4th cast is'nt hard to take. Hooked the big girl right after landing about 10 smaller bass, 3 nice runs and she was done. Goin' back tonite!

Water was chocolate brown from the overflow of the Conowingo Dam. It was not fishable therefore it became a four hour trip instead of an all dayer. The rivers were just as bad as it was incoming tide thus moving the brown water back up into the tributaries. The boat ramp was a mess with the wind and the yahoos. Guys were getting their stuff ready at the launch!!! Hammerhead central....never again on a weekend. We even saw a boat that was capcized being removed from the water. Traffic was unbelievable on the water. Please guys use caution and a little common sense in these conditions....and don't net those spawners!!!!

Started out bright and early. Bay was like a lake. I was hoping for some wind, and then it started to blow like you wouldn't believe. The entire incoming tide was devoid of any fish, but I stuck it out because I liked the conditions, rough but clean water. At the top of the tide, the fish started to bite big time. Had to hold the pole because of the wind to feel the bites. Saw a bunch caught in a 2 hour period, including 3 or 4 small keepers. Tried throwing a SB bucktail, but I couldn't get it far enough. Did see one caught on a bucktail. Not a bad day.

Turned unfishable, so I sprinted to the truck. With tommorrows wind, it wont be fishable, but I'll be back during the week. As i put the rod in the spike and went to sit down it doubled over.First fish of the year. Rebaited chucked it out again and was in before i could put it in the spike.that was the 34"er. I couldnt believe it. guys to my right and left were also amazed. Third clam you guessed it third fish instantly. 10minutes 3 clams 3 fish. I couldnt even light a smoke. lost 3 more on really hard takes before i caught the last two. after 1 hour 15 mins. no bait left. was on the phone with fishin buddies all night. Took a hop down to a favorite spot after work and I wasn't disapointed. First hour was very slow, but as the sun set the fish came to life.First fish was a 25" striper that hit like a bull, it was a nice fight for me, but no so nice for 2 Canadian Geese that were interrupted during their swim by a stripers leap. Almost dropped the rod laughing.Although most of the days catch were dink fish rangeing from 15" to 26" and nothing very note worthy about any of those. Still in all a nice evening out on the river. I expect the cows will be around within a week or so. That seems to be the rule for the Hudson River. Mid April to June for the big ones and when they get here.....HOLD ON TIGHT!!!!! 3 of us Spent 12 hours on a fishing pier in Alpine NJ. The days catch included 37 Striped bass up to 23" and a few catfish up to 4 pounds, we were also inundated with the infamous White Perch 16 of the little bait stealers to be exact. Bloodworms are the key bait right now. I had something?? bend my 9' heavy action rod, over in a full "C"..(thanks to a shimano baitrunner, I still have my rod) I set the hook, but whatever it was just kept right on going. It took all 250 yards of my 17 lb. test right down to the knot and then spit the hook. If it didn't happen to me, I wouldn't believe that a fish can pull that hard for so long and not stay hooked. The Hudson river is comeing alive..I heard of 2 fish in the 30+lb range being landed at Croton Point on the morning of 4/4/00. and many fish up to 20+" at piermont pier.
everyone have a great season TIGHT LINES <'///><

Decided to hit a little closer to home, as nice sunny days usually drive the fish off the flats where I usually fish. Hit the Delaware down south on the incoming and first 2 hours of the outgoing. Had five bass mixed from 22" little guys up to a nice fat 29" and 32" fish (first keepers I lipped this year). Still a little too sunny for my taste and I think this affected the action. Nowhere near the action this spot can have, but we're getting there...Expecting the big girls to show up any day now.
