Reports for 2003
**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.

Big World Marina Stiper Tournament 2003. The 40 inch Striper weighed in at 23.5 pounds to take 1st place and win the prize. All three fish were caught within one hour, out of the Delaware Bay. A lot of Stripers were caught on this day, and the conditions were good for the tournament. Good Fishing!

Reports of fluke being caught on the rising and flood tide at this particular location the previous evening drew us to try our luck. We were told that an occasional striper could also be caught foraging in the surf here so we also soaked herring, cut in half with both halves impaled on an 8/0 circle hook. The worms were fished on a flounder hook. The worms produced 14 skates throughout the flood and the herring produced 3 dogfish towards the peak of the tide. Doggie # 3 was the equivalent of strike three for us. We departed for the Merrimac River basin and a plan of possibly fishing the dropping tide. Once at the Coast Guard Station parking lot received discouraging reports from other anglers of "0" fish caught, same as our previous trip to this locale on 7/26, and decided to depart for fresh coffee and the highway home instead.

The bluefish were thick enough to walk on in the moored boats on the outside of greenwich harbor monday evening , we trolled chrome till we got into them , then started casting and or jigging the chrome because they were smashing it as soon as it hit the water. hooked up on the big bass hadda get off the hook for it , it had 150 yards of line by then ,, battled it for a while , saw her ( assuming it was a big cow) then she made a crash dive and clipped it off. that was about 6pm. later , about 8 pm the other 2 fish hit. they were schoolie bass then late night about 12 am picked up a sand shark about 4 feet in length shortly after that a big eel all just off the point where the reef sticks out

Oh man where do I start. About two weeks ago just after dark with a mid tide ebbing, I managed to catch and release 3 big bass from 20-25 Lbs (finally no bluefish). For the next two weeks I hadn't caught a thing and I began to wish that I kept one of those bass because my fridge is all out of meat. This morning, my friend Mike and I decided to give it one more chance before work. We both agreed that this would be the last time because "they're probably already gone." After about 45 minutes of nothing, mike got a hit and took the line of the roller to let it run (his Van Stal has no bail). After a few seconds he reeled up the slack, set the hook, but there was no fish....just slack. So we thought...When he tightened the line the bass erupted about 10 feet from the rock he was standing on (it must have swam towards him after taking the eel...I love it when they do that). It seemed to be big by the size of the splash, and was soon off on a nice long run (Mike's bass always run a lot further because he likes to set his drag loose. After about 10 minutes, the bass was in and on its side, and I grabbed her...and I said "holy !%it this thing is huge." We were pumped and before weighing it I knew it was over 30 simply because I had grabbed two others of similar size (for Mike) earlier in the season. I would like to tell everyone just how excited we were to see a big bass this late in the season...we never had luck this late in the year. I guess I'm not going hunting tomorrow morning, because I just picked up four eels!!!! SEE YA!!!!!

We lost 10 of 12 eels to bluefish and possibly one shark (eel was shredded rather than chopped. Caught 2 keeper bass on remaining live eels...we then figured out that if we could hold bottom better (ie. jig head), we may be able to get more bass. We managed to land one just over 20 lbs, but my friend Mike lost one quite a bit bigger after he wrapped on a rock. It was a crazy night with the surf and wind being so strong. We are kind of lucky it was a lowish tide or we might not have made it past all of the slippery black rocks...

The Windy has been enjoying absolutely the best summer of fishing ever. The inshore fishing for Stripers, Fluke and Porgies has been phenominal. We have been limiting out with Stripers everyday and big fish too. Last Sunday Steve Pavuloniis reelin two on an Umbrella rig that weighed in total 72 pounds. That's only three pounds short of a pound for each year of Steve's age of 75. Best catch on an Umbrella so far this season was 96 pounds on one rig. Its been like this everyday. The Fluke fishing is the best I've ever seen it. Just today John Glover and his group from Royersford PA Limited out with 42 Big Fluke to 10.2 pounds by Noon time. The average Fluke that Mike our Mate filleted today was 41/2 pounds, its incredible. If we've got a group that would rather Porgie fish instead of Fluke after limiting out on Stripers they're the biggest kind. 11/2 pound average with acoulpe over 4 pounds. This red hot action will peak towards the end of September. So come on down to Montauk and get in on it!

Things have really been going well as of late on the Windy. We have been sailing every day and putting together some very impressive catches of Stripers and Fluke on the Inshore scene and when we've been offshore the Bluefin Tuna and Sharks have been cooperating for us. On Monday the 5th we were offshore with Mitch Bradbury and his group from Yonkers NY for a 200 pound Brown Shark before comming in and limiting out with the Stripers. On Tuesday Mitch opted to stay inshore. They were limited out with 12 Big Stripers to 35 pounds by 8:30 before heading down the beach to the Towers off Napeague for 40 Fluke to 7 pounds. The Bass were all caught on Umbrellas at the Porgy Lump east of the Point and the Fluke were on Squid and Spearing combos. On Wednesday Rod Hood was up from Richmond VA. It was another great day of inshore fishing Limiting out on the Stripers and then limiting out with the Fluke. Today was a replay again for Derrick Barcus from Avington PA except the Bass were bigger The boys landed four over 30 pounds and filled out their limit with 25 pounders. It was a georgeous day the North Wind droped out, and that made for perfect conditions for Fluking. The day was so nice I even put out a line myself and landed 12 keepers to 61/2 pounds. The Inshore action is constant, Plenty of Bass and Fluke. So far its been a terrific Summer, the Fall should be spectacular.

Well, fishing never stays tough in Montauk for long. Last week we had to work for every Striper we caught and this wee they're jumping into the Windy. Tuesday morning we had out John Barbieri and his group from Setauket NY and by 8:30 we not only had our limit of 12 Stripers but Mate Mike was throwing back 20 pound fish. it was quite a morning and a very impressive catch when we hit the dock. The average Striper we brought in was 22 pounds. On Wedensday it was a replay for Stanley Nolt and the boys from Ephrata PA. Once again we were limited out with Big Stripers by 8:00 before we headed offshore Shark Fishing. All of this red hot action was on Umbrella Rigs. The best fishing was in the East End of the North Rip, the Flats and the Torcher Chamber. We are on the rise of the Moon right now and I expect to see some really big Stripers in the next week

has this hot weather brought the summer doldrums with it. Striped Bass fishing got tough this last week, anglers on the Windy had to work for evey fish they kept. Fortunately for us we caught our limit evey trip until Sunday afternoon. Wow, what a strugle that was. We had been catahing pretty good on the Tourcher Chamber a deep water spot just north of the North Rip but on Sunday afternoon we found only Two Keepers and a few throw backs. The Stripers will be biting again I am sure the very week tides are having there effect on them and not the heat when you pass over a spot the Fish Finder is showing them stacked up. There is just no movement in the water to get them turned on. The good news is the Fluke have been biting very well in the MidWay rips and down the Southside. On Saturday after lmiting out with the Stripers Mac McLean and his group fished withusand had one Helluva mess of Fluke before calling it a day. This red hot Fluking should be with us for the rest of the season. Good news from offsore too! Althought the Windy wasn't booked for offshore fishing thi week many of the boats that got out caught TUNA only 20 miles from the Point. Not Just a few stragglers but their seeing schools of them on the surface. The next day the Windy gets offsrore is Wednesday. Were booked for Shark but we'll be ready for the TUNA. There is sill a couple of days left open in July and August for TUNA so if you've got the urg to tackl e a TUNA give us a cll 631-668-5741

The Windy is still going strong, what a ro;; were on. On Saturday 6-29-02 we had quite a day. Joe Flynn and his group form Totowa NJ were out Shark Fishing. I ran the Windy South to the West side of the Butterfish hole in 200' of water. We set the boat adrift and started chumming with ground Bunker. It took about an hour for our first bite and it turned out to be the only one we needed. Joe landed a 245 Thresher, the hardest fighting Shark we have. After killing the Thresher we headed in and dtopped at the Point made a couple of swipes and landed 5 nice Stripers. In the evening Chad Glinsky was out for Stripers. We leave the dock at about 4:30pm on these Striper Special evening trips. The Stripers were there waiting for us. I headed straight to the Elbow, we were jigging 2oz Andrus Parachute jigs chartruse in color. We limited out with 6 Striperd in the 25-30 class Sunday the Striper Fishing was even better, we fished the Elbow and the Slot, to catch our limit plus a bunch of throw backs for Bill Urban and his group. It was a terrific day, we landed the best Bass of the season and the largest at Stat island Yacht Club where the Windy is docked a 44.9 pound Striper was the victom of a white and red Parachute. It seems like theres alot of BIG fish around right now.

Stripers Largest 35 Pounds fluke 61/2 pounds
Wow! What a great week we had on the Windy. Limiting out on the Stripers every day and the Fluking is getting better all the time. It started out on Monday with Niel VanGinHoven and the boys from the Patchogue Fishing Club. We easily jigged up our limit of Stripers on the Elbow, Great Eastern and Caswells, and then it was out to the Mid Way Rips for Fluke. We started drifting west of the South Rip on the last of the Flood Tide, the perfict time to drift over my Flukezilla Spot, but there was nobody home and our first drift resulted in only a couple of keepers and a bunch of shorts. The next drift was East of the Mid Way Bouy and they really took hold with the slackening of the tide. We ended up with 25 keepers to 51/2 pounds. All of the fish were caught using Squid Spearing Combos for bait. Tuesday was even better. Vince Ricciardelli of Mahopac NY was out on the Windy we caught our limit of 12 Stripers by 10am nice fish too, 35 pounds the largest, all on the Elbow, the Slot and Great Eastern. We Bass fished until the Flood Tide broke, catching a few upgraders and then it was back out to Mid Way and the Fluke. Red Hot! I even took down my rod and caught 3 over 5 pounds. Wednesday we had out Fritz Coring from Berganfield NJ once again the Bass were biting. We fround great fishing on the Extension of Pollack Rip. Several Stripers over 30 ponds wer landed before we took off after the Fluke. The first two drifts were hot 12 nice Fluke to 4 pounds and then the Dog Fish found us. It became impossible. We had to give it up and head for the Pocketbook where we caught a few more keeper Fluke and a nice mess of Sea Bass. Today (friday) we had out Phil Malott from Allentown PA. Last year Phil adn the boys clobbered the Tuna this year they wanted to stay inshore and try their luck with the Stripers. They got what they came for. 3, 18 pounders at Caswells, 3 more at the North Rip and we finised up upgrading in the Slot catching 3 in the 30 pound range. We then went right back to Mid Way and they Fluke. Mate MIke was hot catching 12 keepers himself to 51/2 pounds. The water around the Point is warming up rapidly there were several Makos caught today and one Thresher, lets hope the Tunas are only a few days away.

Well things are starting to get pretty busy on the Windy. On Friday 6-21 we had out Kenny (The Grander) Gordon and a group from Planet Honda in NJ and we had a great day of Inshore Fishing for Stripers and Fluke. We started out fishing the Elbow and the Slotand had a steady pick of nice size Bass. Fish in the 18 pound range and a few throw backs, this was on the end of the Flood Tide. When the tide started to Ebb things quieted down and we still needed a few more for our limit, but perserverance wins out, when the tide broke we found some big ones on the 36 lump. Several 30 pounders were landed ,until we limited out and were upgrading fish from our live well. On Saturday the target species was Shark for Joe McGowan and his group from Middletown NY. We stopped at the Point for a couple of passes on the Bass and lucked out with 3 beuties. Tommy had a 37 pounder, Kieth a 35 pounder and an 18 pounder rounded out our catch before we headed the Windy South to the Shark Grounds. We started chumming about 24 miles SSE of the Point in 225' of water at the mouth of the First Finger on the East side of the Butterfish Hole and the Blue Sharks came steady, the boys caught and released 6 from 25 - 150 pounds. On Saturday Evening we had out Mac McLean and his family for some evening Stripers. It was hot! The Elbow was alive with birds and baitfish splashing all over, plenty of action. We were jigging 2oz Andrus Parachute Jigs and had the best fishing just at dark when the big boys took hold. We had a very impressive catch of Stripers to 38 pounds, 5 over 30.

The Striped Bass fishing is getting better everyday. Yesterday (wed) Frank Fatone and his group were out on the Windy for a day of Bass Fishing. The weather was perfict flat A calm, no wind and bright Sun. It was by far the nicest day of the year, it looks as if were finnaly in a summer weather pattern. The day started out slow as we got out just in time for slack tide. We picked a few but nothing we could work on. We were jigging 2oz. Andrus Parachutes on the Elbow worked out to Great Eastern and found a few more. When the tide got going the Stripers came to life and it was two a pass in both direction for the next three hours. We moved out to the Porgy Lump and found Bass of the large model we upgraded with Stripers to 32 Pounds. Terrific fishing! Today the Windy wasn't booked so I mated for Capt. Tom Herlihy of the Herl's Girl also one of the top Bass producers in Montauk. We were doing an afternoon 1/2 day trip and the Bassing was as good as it gets all big fish too by the end of the trip I was throwing back 20 pounders this red hot action should last until mid July at least.

If it was not for the skates....probably alot more than (3). I did lose (1) though that took the pole down on free spool and I had him/her on for about 8 minutes. It was running like a mako 21' w/a 175 on it, I never saw it though, I had it close to the beach and then poof...gone. I use the Gama 5/0 and I just stood there on the beach and could not believe what happened did. I got a 34 1/2" a few weeks ago and this badboy just blew it away. Anyway, thats why I'm heading back out there tonight. See Ya

Fished IBSP in blistering cold temperatures around A-18 and was able to get only the 2nd keeper bass of the year. Tried circle hooks for the first time and was pleased with the results. With the weather being so cold it helped to keep the hands in the pockets warm, and not have to worry about setting the hook.

this seasons is not even worth talking about, soon it will be over and i can start to get some sleep again. I fish as much as humanly possible and its true for the surf guy its been bad, to say the least. I don't even see anything off the beach worth paying to go out for, not 50bucks anyway. maybe if it were the old days at 18bucks. hopefully the best is yet to come if it would just get cold, i know its nice out but thats not what surf fishings about. when i think of nov.-dec fishing i think of busting fish everywhere and a cloud of birds on the horizon moving south, not to mention 15-20 degree temps with wind chills in the single digits. no bunker no big fish, small bait= small fish, anyone who says they would take sandeels over bunker is crazy and has not been out there for the past 20 years. I have been and remember 1lb bunker bitten in half buy 15lbs of bluefish, or taking home a 20lb bass to find a half a dozen cupcakes in her. so for the guys who wanted all the sandeels you got'em .

Went out this morning with Brendan McCarthy from the Marine Pkwy marina into Jamaica Bay. Lots of birds working with a moderate chop and wind that was blowning us around. Caught 3 near the bridge in 26"-27" size while pretty much drifting deep back toward the bridge. Others caught off of Coney Island area. Had a lot more hook ups but lost them. All but one hook-up was when line was deep. Outstanding morning!!

First keeper this year. Spent time on Saturday and Sunday in the ocean in Mecox and Montauk. Nothing. This morning I stayed close to home. Lesson in there somewhere, ruby red slippers.... Can't wait for a weekend w/o 20+ mph wind so that I can throw a fly. Still the surf stick and the old reliable white bucktail did the trick. Probably peanut bunker in the area. We had a great lunch w/ friends. I love three day weekends.

Not much action to report. I have been fishing the change of tides, and the only bites were about half hour befor low tide. Basically one bite per day. I saw a lot of fish follow my lure up to the pier, and I lost quite a lot of tails of my shad, but bites?.....

We arrived at the parking lot at 5:00pm. Climbed down the 60 odd steps to the beach with our rods and bait. I put on two fresh clam bellies for my son and he lobbed a soft cast into the water, before I could bait my rod the first 40" fish took his bait. A few minutes later we had the fish on the beach. I baited my hooks and casted into the same area within a minute or less I caught a 24" fish with my son enjoying a good laugh. I baited up again and casted to a 38" fish within 30 seconds of the bait hitting the water. Well we had our limit and were packing up to leave when my other son shows up and and see's the fish, well he insisted that we bait up again and get another fish. I gave in to his demand and baited up again. Bingo we caught the 38" fish. The people that saw us fishing thought we were doing something special but we walked on the beach and tried our luck and it was over in 30 minutes and we have the pictures too.

Capt. Mitch here. Boy has it ever been a busy summr. I have been remiss in putting out reports but just haven't had hardly a moment to myself, except for a couple of breakdown days and a few weather days. the entire summr has seen large concentrations of bass and blues around the Island. there have been periods when they had lockjaw but generally the fishing has been excellant. June was perhaps the best month with the month of July a close second. August ws august and a little slow at times when water temps got in the high sixties and even seventy a few days, but the fishing is picking up again and the fall shows good promise. Bluefish are still around in good abundance and black sea bass are eerywhere as are the scup, a perfect formula for a great day.Average catches ae ususally a limit of stripers and all the sea bass you can get a line too. Southwest ledge and the North rip are good producers and the east side of the Island seems to have the bigger scup and sea bass. Hopefully water temperatures will go down during the next few weeks and the bass will put on the feed bag. this should continue to improve right through thanksgiving with the biggest bass of the year coming through during the month of November. I'll try to be a little more prudent in posting reports. Until then GOOD FISHIN CAPT. MITCH CHAGNON
