Reports for 2003
**Fishing reports are an important part of catching more fish. However, they should be read to help you understand what the fish are eating, when the fish are eating, and to learn what areas the fish are feeding in. They should not be read to try and figure out an exact set of boot prints for you to stand in, this won't help, it will only frustrate you, it's very rare that there will be a repeat of a past night's performance. That is why all are encouraged to post reports and are asked to just give a general location, not a specific spot.

(Enter comments and details here)Smooth late afternoon, just was looking out the window of the ocean yiew condo in Sea Bright, birs start forming like crazy. Grab the rod from the side of the porch with the new 6 inch bunker plug and let fly about 20-25 ft off the surf, bang into my first of 10 fish that night. With a sore arm from the action, pack up ,went back over the stairs to the sea wall and home. Good times.

The fishing is typical for February. Water temperature is always critical. I know up north they catch them through the ice, but southern fish don’t like cold water. A dozen fish right now is a good day, and some of those can be in the 20-30 lb. range. We have been struggling with the wind in the last few days. Later on, when we are fishing straight down and can anchor, the wind is not a problem. But trying to pull planers with a 3ft. chop is really tough. The water struggled to get out of the low 50’s this week and the upper tributaries got real muddy with this last rain, but we need the water so we’re not complaining. My good friend, and fellow guide, Mark Crawford and I went looking for some trophy fish for our clients. We pulled big baits in Little River Carolina, Buffalo Creek, Soap Creek and Baker Creek. We had a great day, although we didn’t land anything really big. I highly recommend these areas in the next few weeks. March is just right around the corner, and as the water temperature rises the fish activity will increase.

We had many runs of Striper pass with in feet of the pier, nothing was taking the bait real or fake. One old timer called it a day when he hit a Striper with his bottom rig setup with Mackerel, Sand Eel, and Pogie, the Striper didn’t want any part of it. He gave up and left but not before I bought 6 Buck tails from him. We Gave up at Noonish and went over to Joe’s @ Sandwich Marina where I saw a Loon eating one of what the stripers were eating a little Brown fish about 4 inches long. Went back to the pier around 8:30 PM talked to a young guy from Weymouth who was there before I arrived in the AM until after I left in the PM and he got a Schoolie Striper 21” caught through the side. NOTHING WAS BITING. Bluto

After lots of action on july, we hit a wall this month. We go to Rockport all the time, with fresh bait from gloucester and bamn. Most of times we like to get low tide going up so when the water bring in the fish we'll be ready. In july we were there 3 times, got over 100 stripers and a blue, to keep only 5 (28,29,30,32,32,38.) Not to bad! But this month: "nada-zip" We went yesterday and sucked. Ton of bay, chalm ever some lures were used. I believe it's been to hot these past weeks, when september arrives we will be back. Good luck to you and remember: "don't go fishing, go get fish"

(Enter comments and details here)After many years of catching stripers in the 30 to 39 inch range from shore ,I finally broke the 40 inch mark.I was presenting alot of artificials, then decided to take a break and switch to bait.Using a slider with a 2 ounce pyrimid and a std. no.4 striper hook baited with live blood worm.At dead hi on a perfect blue bird Maine day I landed a very healthy round 40.5 inch striper. The fish took about 15 minutes or so to land I used the swell sets to my advantage during pauses in the sets the fish would charge for deep water then during breaking sets I surfed him to shore. The fish was landed measured then released.I would have to estimate its weight in the 25 plus range. Maine regulations are slot fish are 20 to 26 and then 40 and over.

BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE-Stripers 7/4/2007 Big Bass moved into the inner-harbor this past week producing our largest bass of the season caught on surface presentations. Saturday morning’s charter started in at first-light in Quincy bay. Dana Wilson of Landmark Impressions of Woburn, MA made a big “impression” by hooking our season’s best fish to date; a 39”, 22# striper on a surface-rigged soft-plastic. After a brief Kodak moment, the keeper was revived employing the Boga grip and released. A mix of small blues and school bass from the upper-reaches of the inner harbor added to the day’s catch. Winslow’s afternoon delight in white and chartreuse Gartside’s gurglers also fished well on the long rod using floating Wonderline. One the way back to Cohasset harbor, the anglers fished the pocket-water on the rocky ledges and promontories of Minot’s, and hooked and release numbers of school bass to 24”. On the Eve of the Fourth, Chris Straub and his good friend and colleague, Tim Roland, of Ultimate Valet Service in Boston, also fished the upper-reaches of the inner-harbor bays in the afternoon. The bass are still feeding on silversides, and although there was no surface activity evident, once again appropriate presentations fished on structure produced great results. With the wind a steady 20 knots, fly fishing was difficult. While the fishing was slow to start producing only a few small schoolies on light-tackle, by the middle of the ebb that surface action picked up. Chris struck pay-dirt first announcing he was “On” from the front casting platform. With the wind pushing the boat in one direction and the bass moving the other, we decided to give chase. The fish pulled the Boga to 18# and measured 34 inches. Not to be out-done, after a relocating over structure, Tim teased his keeper to the surface from the 9 ft. depths. After a brief chase, we netted a fat, 33”, 18# twin, completing a double! This charter was a gift to Chris from his new wife, Tatum; she is a “keeper” in my book, and I, for one, will be stopping by and seeing her at “Mistrals” on Columbus Avenue real soon. Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters

I fish from the same spot that my grandfather showed me when I was about 5 yrs. old, using the same hole in the rock, that holds my rod. I would haved stayed longer but the snow on the rocks accumalated to the point it became a little to slick. The bass frequent this area near the outflow of the pocantico river,(sweet water)and Ive been lucky enough to meet and keep a few over 30 inches over the years .

BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE-Stripers 8/12/06 Peanut Bunker Blitz Underway Early last week big bass had the silversides corralled as they staged in the inner-harbor bays and coves. Stripers to 38 inches and 22 pounds were being hooked on a daily basis with good numbers of school-bass to 27 inches mixed in. By weeks end, schools of 1-1 ½ inch peanut-bunker moved into the outer-harbor and along the South Shore with hordes of marauding 4-8 pound bluefish crashing on the fleeing bait fish. School bluefin are on the bank and may move inshore behind the bunker, as in the past. The Broderick boys and friend (Cohasset & Hingham) had a banner day early last week casting soft-plastics to big stripers swirling on the surface feeding on silversides. This charter was a birthday gift to Jim Broderick from his wife Karen. As luck would have it, high-liner, Matt Broderick from Cohasset, took top-honors with two 38”, 21 pound keeper bass on light-tackle. Not to be out done, Jim hooked is birthday keeper bass on the last drift of the day. We picked up Steve Forded, hailing from across the Big Pond (UK), at Rowes Wharf for an early morning fish. Steve was in Boston for a week at MIT doing technical work for his business. This was to be his first light-tackle trip, and the first time he wet a line for stripers. At first light, on his first cast, Steve rose and hooked a big bass which threw the hook on the run. The next cast, we were into another big striper tapped at 38” and 21 pounds, which was promptly revived and released. The top-water action continued right through the morning flood tide producing numbers of school bass to 27”. Steve was amazed by the action and numbers of stripers here in Boston, and he threatened to bring his brother on his next trip to the States. By week’s end the surface activity increased dramatically, especially in the outer-harbor regions. Squadrons of blues were pushing the peanut-bunker to the surface, and the sea birds were taking advantage of the feeding foray. Mostly blues are in the deeper water (40-80 ft) and the stripers are more inshore. This activity heralds the start of the Peanut-Bunker Blitz which will continue to escalate right into the fall all along our coastline, and is an indicator of the spectacular fish to come. The Gangemi family, of Cohasset, MA, was right in the thick of the feeding foray inshore on Sunday. At times we were tripled with school bass to 27 inches. Although, the production of big bass has decreased, the numbers of surface blitzing fish makes up for it! Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters

Ok, i was sitting there on the dock hoping to catch something because i hadn't been fishing in a week. So, I set my rod down and grab a piece of licorice and sit down for about 20 minutes when I see my line go tense then it loosens up. I was getting excited because I knew a big one was playing with it! About another 15 minutes goes by when my line went tense and my rod bent like half way! So, I ran to it and released some line for him to take it. Then i jammed it and hooked it and reeled in for about a good 2 minutes. This thing really hurt my arms! I'm only 13 so I dont have a boat yet! All excited I see the thing jump up and my mouth dropped. I had never seen a striper so big in person in my life! It was the biggest one I have ever caughten. I brought it up to the edge grabbed my tape measure and measured it in the water (bad idea) IT MEASURED 40"!!!!!!!!! . I reached in and got it by the mouth barely and the hook lost its lip and it got away!!!!!!!!!! I was sooooooo mad at myself it was a bad idea!!!!!!!!! Well, i pretty much did catch it i just never brought it ALL the way out of the water...I guess i learned my lesson!

BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE-Stripers 8/4/06 This week traveling anglers from Utah and California found the inner-Harbor alive with big bass slurping silversides in the upper reaches of the bays. These new arrivals, covered with sea-lice, were taking both surface and sub-surface imitators both on light-tackle and the long rod. Where we were able to find the baitfish stacked up on the fish finder, the anglers cast to swirling big bass or raised the stripers to the surface on blind casts. Some of the best surface action was to be had, and the largest fish of the summer are here in numbers. The week proved to be a scorcher which heralded equally hot striper fishing. Brad Hill’s from Alpine, Utah and his lovely, first wife, Cindy, traveled east for a week’s vacation and 3 days on the water. Hill’s, a very experience fly fisher in both fresh and saltwater, found the stripers cooperative casting chartreuse half & half’s and a epoxy-head herring creation, tied by Tom Keer, NE Editor of Fly Fisherman, using 400 grain Depth Charge fly line on both Monday and Wednesday. I was busy releasing numerous school bass (15-20 day) to 27 inches, while Brad’s biggest fan, Cindy, snapped photos and offered words of encouragement. On Wednesday, Brad struck his first keeper of the week with the herring pattern; a nice 16 pound, 34” striper that was promptly released. San Diego, CA, father and son team, Mike and Jerry Palmer, tried their hands with Boston’s bass using light-tackle, soft-plastic, surface presentations. They had a day to remember. Mike’s first bass at first light exploded at boat-side on a Texas-rigged plastic stick-bait. The 38”, 22 pound linesider dumped half the reel on the first run and we had to give chase with the boat. Not to be out done, High-liner for the day, son Jerry, raised and hooked his own 36”, 20 pound keeper bass. A few small blues and numbers school bass to 27 inches were hooked and all released unharmed. As the heat wave abated by Friday, Brad and Cindy Hills were treated to the best fishing of the week. Sighting swirling bass on the near mirror-like surface, we switched to a chartreuse popper fished on floating Wonderline. Brad spotted a swirl, directed me to move the boat, and on his second cast, using a staccato retrieve with a long pause, raised and struck the big one. The 36”, 20 pound striper was instantly into the backing and heating up the Vortex anti-reverse reel. Big bass continued to pop around the boat and we could see them raise to the popper and almost nose it before turning away. We found that a protracted pause after a few quick strips brought the most aggressive strikes, and red & white poppers worked best. Four keepers 36”, 35”, 34” and 30” with a total of 30+ bass on fly rod for the day for one angler was a great Boston vacation finale. It’s great when a plan comes together; I’d rather be lucky than good! Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters

Fished the jetties at Dowse's Beach in early May. Lots of schoolie stripers. They were aggressive - coming after the lures all the way to the rocks. Few big guys - close to 28". They've left the area, but can be found in the inlets behind Long Beach. Blues are off the beach during the day, and seem to like the swim shads if they're reeled in fast and towards the top. Of course they rip the rubber shads immediately, so it's not always worth the time, but they're fun to catch on light tackle.
Sunday,5-14-06; The winds are blowing again so I finally got a break long enough to catch up on some of my "paper work". Yesterday we met up with the gang from Fayetteville, NC. They were Tony Cameron,Fred White, Billy Owens,Clyde Brooks, and James Williams. We went after bottom fish and we found a wide variety that wanted to ride to the dock on the "YEAH RIGHT" and so we welcomed them aboard!!! We had some big triggerfish, some big silver snapper, some big vermillion snapper, some big Black Bass, some very nice grouper, some big joltheads, some big grey snapper, but Fred White's big American Red Snapper was the rarest catch of the day!! We don't get a lot of those off our coast anymore and when you get one it is a real treet and a big surprise, not to mention some great fillets on the grill!!!! We got these fish at only three stops, two were some of our usual places but one I found as I was moving to another place. I seen it on the color scope and turned around and got it "pinpointed" on the GPS, pulled up current from it, dropped anchor, drifted back on top of it and we dropped the baits down. Now let me tell you, from that point on, it was on!!!!!! These guys had the electric reels "smoking". We even hooked two fish that took the gears right out of two of our 4/0 reels. I mean you could not stop these two fish!!!!! The last two days, first in the Gulfstream slamming big Mahi-Mahi, busting off big Wahoo's then the next day catching bottom fish till your arms ache, I love it, I could not think of doing anything else, and when you get to fish with the kind of folks like the guys from Fayetteville, why would you want to do anything else? Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie' the fish dog says HI!!!!! YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS,Southport,NC
P.S. Fred, we saved you a few for the next time. The other guys didn't want too, but I made them!!! Sure hope Mrs. Brown is doing better!!! Thursday,5-11-06: Am I dreaming or did I spend a BEAUTIFUL DAY in the gulfstream yesterday with Mike, Sherry and Brian Gould and Brian's fiance Kim Smith. The weather and seas were gorgeous. We got a late start, so we set a course to the 100/400 to start our day. We left the dock at 7:15AM and we reached our destination at 9:05, yeah, it was CALM SEAS!!!! Upon arriving, there were several other boats already there. The reports were a very few fish bing hooked up. An occasional Mahi- Mahi, an occasional Wahoo, but no reports of a Tuna. We thought maybe we could be the one to start the Tuna bite so we put our lines in and set towards the Blackjack Hole. Between the 100/400 was a slightly formed weed line. Looked like what was left after the day before 10 foot seas had busted it up, but was enough there to pull the baits around. We tried and had no results!! After reaching the Blackjack, the reports were still that the bite was slow. Thirteen miles to the Steeples. Let's pull the lines in and run to there. Capt Chris, who was mating today, picked up the first rod to bring them in, and we had a double hook up of Mahi- Mahi. OK, we will stay here!! Another 30 to 45 minutes of pulling our Ballyhoos proved fruitless. OK, Let's go, I have got to try to get some fish in the boat and I don't think this is going to be the spot today. Upon reaching the Steeples, the water was a deeper blue and the temps. were 3 degrees warmer. The bait was not as thick as it was a few weeks earlier, but there was some. We fished the rest of the day here, never got a Tuna bite, but had a good day on the Mahi- Mahi. Mike even fought a big Bull Dolphin that we seen several times, even on the International 50 wide reel, Mike would take in 10 yards of line and he would take back 15. This battle back and forth finally was more than the 50 lb. line could handle and it finally parted leaving Mike with only a memory of a battle well fought with the Mahi winning this one. We don't know how much he weighed, but, it was a very large bull!!!! Now, as for the Wahoo's. Somedays, no matter how hard you try, sometimes nothing goes right. We had plenty of chances to get a Wahoo!!! We had lines cut, baits bit off, fish get off, lines broke, we had the Wahoo bites, but that was it for the Wahoos, could not get one in the boat. Today was their day, but there is an old saying something about the sun not shining somewhere all the time. We thank the LORD for giving us a beautiful day to spend in the Gulfstream with some good friends!! These are the times you cherish and remember back on as life goes on. A good day on the water with some GREAT friends. As for the weekends weather, right now they aren't talking in our favor, but they may change it as the weekend gets closer, let's hope it gets better!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI!! YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC
Saturday 4-22-06: Sorry this report is late, don't have an excuse, I just got lazy and am just now getting to it. We left the dock Friday morning with Bill Roberson,Chris Brafford, Joe Arthur, Jon Caton, David Arthur, and Joe Cotton. We were to start off king mackeral fishing. I figured this would be easy enough. Just two days before we were catching kings to the SW of the Tower. I set our MAKO "YEAH RIGHT" on course to the spot we were at the other day. I told our crew to get comfortable, the first stop was 35 miles out. At around 8:00AM I pulled the throttles back on the HONDAS and was suprised to find that the area looked like "The Dead Sea". I made several circles to find nothing. The water looked good, the temperature was almost 70* but there was no fish or bait. No need to start here I said, let's move on to another place. I put in some more numbers and off we went. As we got closer I realized another boat was already there. Not much happening here, was the report!! OK, I got a spot about ten miles from here. The way things are looking, I believe these fish may have moved to a little shallower water. We will be going with the swell so we can make short work of the 10 mile run. By this time I was thinking to myself. I bet todays charter thinks they are on an expensive boat ride. I hate to have to ride like this, but if you make a bad call and don't find the fish, then regroup and don't waste time at that spot and go try to find them. We left the second place and now the pressure was on me!! Was I going the right way? Should I go farther offshore? Should I go to the East? maybe West? I got to find these guys some fish and not take all day!! I arrived at the 3rd place. By not wasting time at the areas where we marked no fish or bait it was only 9:00am. Not bad for running 35 miles offshore then another 5 miles then another 10 miles. Upon arrival, I told everyone this looks good!! Capt. Chris baited up the rods and put them out, I set the trolling speed at around 1.1 mph on the GPS. As we crossed over the high spot, I said, these fish are feeding. No more did I get that out when the first rod went off, FISH ON!!!! someone yelled!!!! The bite was starting to heat up, we put 5 kings in the boat rather quickly, then just as it started, the bite went off. We trolled on and kept circling the bait to no avail. The reports from the other boats were that the bite for them had also shut down. So, with this info. we decided to quit wasting time and go bottom fishing. We were in luck, I was real close to some of my favorite bottom structures. We got anchored up and the bite was on!!! We hit four places and at each one the bite was fast and furious but they didn't last real long, maybe an hour and a half at each one. But as the bite would taper, we went to another place. That evening, the tide went slack, the bite shut down and we came home, but, not before we had a good catch of fish for everyone!!!! Another good day of fishing with a great bunch of guys!! Thanks for being patient with me while I was hunting the fish!! Sometimes they seem to not want to play fair!!! Goes back to the old saying "it's called fishing, not catching" But we did find some of them, they can't all hide all the time!!! Enjoyed it guys, looking forward to our next trip!!! Todays Gulfstream trip was blown out, tomorrows trip has been blown out, Mondays Gulfstream trip is in question right now. The weather forecast does not look good for a week at this time. If we get to go we will let you know how we did right here. I am beginning to wonder if the winds are ever going to settle down where we can get back offshore more consistantly. Yeah, they will eventually, but until they do, just make the best out of what you have by fishing inside and just be glad we are free and can go fishing, period!!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog, says HI!!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC.
This is how it went down:
Thursday 4-13-06. It is 11:00PM Thursday night and I hit the floor running at 4:00AM this morning, so, I will probably make this as detailed as I have the ability to right now. We left South Harbour Marina this morning with Mike and Tim Laudicina, their friends, Rob Wilson and John Fleming. Our mission was the Gulfstream and Tuna and dolphin and Wahoo. The first stop we made was at the 100/400, the water temp was fine and there was a little bait around but I didn't like the water color so we moved on to the Black Jack. Here things looked a lot better!! We put out a spread of Cedar Plugs and a deep diving lure, a Manns stretch 50 in a pink color. It wasn't long before a reel sounded off as a Mahi-Mahi crashed the bait, a black and purple cedar plug. We boated him and not long after that something attacked the deep diving plug we had out. I mean literally attacked it, and as far as I know, he still has it!! Figured it was a Wahoo as it cut the line just above where it was tied on!!! Now, the reports from the other boats were very slim to none!! I only heard of one Wahoo and one Yellowfin being caught today on other boats,. I decided after trolling for about another hour with nothing happening to head to the Steeples. When we got there, the water was that beautiful cobalt blue gulfstream water and the temps were warmer and there was some flying fish here and a lot more bait than at the first two stops. Here I marked a school of bait and pulled the lures through it to have three reels go off. One cut off a "Green Machine" the other one had a smaller blackfin tuna, and the other "had" a good size Blackfin Tuna, but, when the dust settled all we had was 1 and 1/3 Blackfin Tunas in the boat. Something big ate the biggest blackfin, all but the head!!! The stream is still slow to get fired up this year, it is past time and it should explode at any time!! We continued to circle the bait where we caught the blackfins but it was soon obvious that we were done here so we left and finished the day bottom fishing. The bottom fish are still cooperating rather well along with the sharks. We caught nice sized Black Bass, Big Pinkies, Big Grey Snapper, Nice Joltheads and Triggerfish, a good Flounder, and even a few B-liners. The King Mackeral also decided to bite fairly good today after a terrible day yesterday!! We have cancelled tomorrows charter due to the forecast winds. Saturday doesn't look any better as does Sunday and Monday. Yeah, it's that time of the year, we don't have to like it, but, we can't do anything about it but wait until it decides to settle down and be ready to go when it does!!! You may want to consider this if you fish much!! You can get the "Road Use Tax" you pay on gas refunded to you on fuel you use in your boat or any other appratus that is not used on the hwy ie; tractor, lawn mower, etc. Just keep all your reciepts and call the North Carolina Dept. of Revenue Motor Fuels Tax Division at (919)733-3409 before the end of the year and request form "Gas-1201". If you are also commercial as we are, you can also save the Sales Tax. You may want to consider this, it can save you a lot of money on fuel if you fish much. Well, when the weather breaks again we will be back out there and we will let you know what's going on! Or at least what's going on with us anyway!!! So. until we can go again, FISH ON!!!!Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, SOUTHPORT,NC
Saturday 4-1-06: Friday morning at 3:30Am until around midnight last night, "yep", those are the kind of days you put in when you fish for a living!! But, It's what I love to do, and I am fortunate to be able to do what I love and be able to earn a livelyhood at the same time. But just like any other job, some times it has it's downfalls, but, not Friday!!!! We went back East of the Tower this morning and the Kings were still there. The bite was not as hot as we left it the evening before. We were starting to do fairly good then a fish hit and the reel screamed as he went straight down. Looks like a tuna run we said!! Guess what, an hour and a half later we saw a "BIG" Blackfin Tuna on the hook. Capt Chris worked him to boat side like the seasoned pro he is. Now, as for the gaff man, well, that's a different story!!!!!!!!!! As he made his circle I drove the gaff home, "YEAH RIGHT". As things happen in fishing, I don't know what went wrong, but he came off the gaff and as Capt Chris was bringing him back to boat side the hooks just pulled out. Let's see, wasn't there a phrase for that one time that went like: "The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat", or something like that!! We set the lines back out and then it happened again. Only this time it was a much larger fish. The battle was on again. the fish was finally brought close enough in the crystal clear water and what we saw looked like a 60 to 70 lb. Yellowfin Tuna. Try that on king tackle. The decision was finally made to tighten the drag and try to pull him up off the bottom. We nearly did it, but three+ hours into this one and the line broke!! Well, now the morning bite on the kings was all but over. We put the lines back out and as every one else was reporting, the bite had shut down. QWe had missed the morning bite fooling with those tunas on light tackle. We ran back inshore about 8 miles and dropped on some bottom structure and started catching some nice bottom fish. We did this a little while until the tide went slack and they stopped biting. We left there and went back to the spot for some more king fishing. We found it to still be real slow. I hated to leave because the bite had been hot there just yesterday, and it was good that morning. But, the day was running out and we had messed with those tuna's all morning and we didn't even have a "box" of fish yet. Reel them in, I told Capt Chris. Somebody has got to make a call, might as well be me!!! If we don't find them, then I'll take the blame!! Now, yesterday in the Tower area the bait was "stacked up". That,s where I am going, I said. We made the run there and put out the lines. A few boats were there hooked up. We started out sorta slow, and I was starting to think that maybe I had made a wrong call. Pull them in again Chris, let's move over to that rock ledge we have on our LORAN!! We did, and let me tell you, as the old saying goes, the rest is history!! we could not keep the lines in the water. Four fish on at any one time. The kings were hitting the baits as you were putting them out. These are the kind of days you dream about. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow, but be sure to check the weather before you head out, it can and does change quick down here. If you can get away, go on out to the Tower and get you some kings. Now, if you are in my spot when I get there, well, that's quite all right, but, you might have to move over a little. I sure hope my fishing reports help out in your search for fish. I know it is running me a small fortune in fuel these days just to go to the Tower and back, and if I can cut your search down, then I feel like I am doing my job!!! I said a small fortune, but it is getting close to a big fortune!! If you like my reports, let us know, it takes a lot of time and effort to keep all this up, but, if you guys like what we do, then that makes what I do worth while. Like I have said in the past" without all of you, what I do would be useless"!! But, this is totally if you would like to!! The last report I got from the Gulfstream was not good. Only heard of one Wahoo caught. We are scheduled to head out there Monday. The weather is "iffy" right now. If we get to go, you can find out what happens right here. Stay in touch, and if I can help, don't hesitate to ask!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI and FISH ON!!!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC.
MONDAY, 3-20-06: There are four things in life that you don't brag on!! They are your wife, your children, your dog, and your ability to fish!!! This past weekend, my charter wanted some black bass, but, we couldn't catch them for the dog sharks. Well, today I had Walter Hudyma and his son Wally from DeMoine, Iowa and Ed Hudyma and Tim McNulty from Holly Springs. Well, these guys wanted a few black bass but mostly wanted sharks. Sharks, no problem, I replied. We immediately left the dock and headed straight to the spot where all the sharks were. Not a problem, I just hope we can get a few bass before the sharks find us. We checked a few schools of fish and finally dropped down on some descent sea bass. We turned the boat around and got anchored up. Maybe we can catch a few of these before the sharks get started. It wasn't long before we had two limits of bass in the boat, but, no sharks. I couldn't believe it, all the bragging about how sharks was no problem, and if I was a millionaire and sharks were 10 cents each, I couldn't have bought one!!!! We pulled anchor and went looking for sharks. Two days before today, you could not get away from the spiney dog sharks, today we did manage 5 sharks, but, I searched hard to get those!!! At my defense, I will add that we are starting into our transition time, one day warm the next cold, the fish say "should I stay or should I go" you know the drill, "here today, gone tomorrow"!! Ever wondered why they are called Spiney Dog Sharks? Here's why: Of coarse it's obvious about the spines on top at the base of their fins giving them the name "spiney" as for the nick name "dog" that's because they school, or run in a pack, ie: "A pack of dogs" therefore the name "dog" add these together and you come up with"Spiney Dog Sharks", they are more commonly called "Spiney Dog Fish". As for the white spots on their sides, that's because that's the way the the GOOD LORD made them!!! Thought you might like that tid bit of info. I thought it was unique!!! Your wife, your dog, and your fishing, bragg on either one of those and they will make a liar out of you every time!!!! But we still caught plenty of fish, had a good time, and made some more friends!! And before you go to bragging about how catching a particular fish will be no problem, remember this, there is a reason it's called fishing and not catching!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC.
Monday 3-13-06: It looks as though the 2006 fishing season has kicked off here in Southport,NC. The water at the Tower was 68 degrees this past weekend and the King Mackeral were hungry. The weather was too nice for me to stay here at the house. So with Capt Chris gone to Lexington,NC to visit with his girlfriend Michelle, that left me to run a commercial trip by myself. If I had known before the last minute I was going I could have called and rounded up some help!! But as it is most of the time in the fishing business, you have to play the weather and most of the time you don't know if you will be able to go until the last minute and calling someone at 4:00AM to ask if they want to go fishing is probably not a good idea. Now, I have recieved some comments from some other Captains saying that they think I should not be posting pictures from a commercial trip since I am a charter service. I don't understand the reason behind this. I am a Charter boat Captain, but I am also a commercial fisherman. I have purchased all the license and permits and fill out all the log books and reports on a by fishing trip and monthly basis, and by posting the commercial trips we run helps you know what is biting where and when. Sure, there have been some rude and critical remarks about all the fish we catch sometimes, and that's to be expected from people that don't understand how it works. There are quotas set, and when those are met, then a particular season will be closed to prevent over harvest, and when I am asked if we can do a commercial trip on a charter, the answer is no, it is illegal to combine a commercial trip with a charter trip. I fish for a living, so why not share the results with other fishermen. Good info. on fishing can be hard to find sometimes!! And as a lot of you already know, I do not have to know who you are, if you want to know where a particular fishing spot is or any kind of info. all you have to do is ask!!! I will tell you one thing, spend a day on the water in the middle of a bunch of hungry King Mackeral by yourself, and if you are my age, they will tell you the next morning that you are not getting any younger!!! This weekend as of this point doesn't sound as though it is going to be good for fishing. They are predicting it to be windy, but it is still a week away, and we all know how fast it can change. So let's all keep our fingers crossed that the front will either speed up or slow down and the winds won't be here Saturday as predicted now!! If you can get out to the Tower area, the Kings are "chewing down" on frozen cigar minnows or you can troll Drone spoons at about 5 knotts behind a #8 planer. Either one will work, but, if the spoons slow down, try going to the minnows, they will usually hit those when they won't hit the spoons. The bottom fish are stacked up out there also. If you are interested in those just go out there and get anchored up and go at it. You may have to move though when the sharks find you!! The fishing season is under way, and remember, if you keep putting it off to go fishing, another year will pass you by, and you will still be wanting to go. Life is too short to not do some of the finer things in life, so give us a call and let's go catch some fish!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog, says HI!!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC
SUNDAY 3-5-06: Well we did it!!! We took the weather mans forecast and headed offshore today. We were beginning to wonder if he had missed it though. It was down right nasty going out this morning. A brisk NW wind was blowing the seas up and they were close together. Several times I almost aborted the mission, but I kept telling myself that I had been in a lot worse. Guess the older you get the less you like it rough!! You can get an idea of what the seas were like by looking at the pictures on the right, then look at how it laid down that afternoon by looking at the water at the Tower that evening. The winds went from NW to SW, and the reversal of the winds will lay it out like that!! The water has been cold offshore for the past few weeks. But we were on a mission to find some King Mackeral to start getting our Federal King Mackeral Permit qualified for this year. The water at the Tower was 63 degrees, normally a bit cool for King Mackeral, but not today, they were there. We had a good bite up to around mid afternoon then they slowed way down. When they slowed, we fished a little for some bottom fish. We did pretty good on those also. Caught some big black bass, also some decent B-liners and some huge Grey Snapper. The sharks were not too bad all though we did catch plenty. We even hooked up with some that proved to be too much for our 50 lb. test line!! We caught just enough bottom fish for a couple of fresh fish dinners, then we decided to head to the hill. OK King Mackeral Fishermen and women, this is the news you have been waiting all winter to hear. Get a pretty day, go get 'em. We will see you there either on the way to the Gulfstream or after we limit out at the stream and stop there on the way back to finish up a day of fishing. That's right, Gulfstream fishing will be in full swing in just a few weeks. The fish are there we just need weather where we can go to them!!! As for the King's today. We trolled frozen cigar minnows today and they seemed just happy as could be to eat 'em!! If you wanted to jig up live ones, you shouldn't have any trouble there were plenty there to jig up!! Get the boat out of mothballs and take it to Mike at SUPPLY BOAT CO. in Supply and get her tuned up and checked out so you will be ready to go fishing when you have the chance. Wait till the last minute to get it done and instead of fishing you will be waiting in line instead of being out catching those first fish of spring!!! IT IS TIME!!!! Till next time, FISH ON!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS
Saturday, 2-25-06: We are back from the FISHERMANS POST FISHING SCHOOL and it went very well I thought. Thanks to all who attended and everyone else that made it possible!! OK, here goes as promised::: we met up with Jason Simmons and his wife June along with Gary Gilbert and Mark Talton. I thought we were going after just some Black Sea Bass when I heard someone say I sure would like some grouper. This changed everything!!! Knowing that this time of year the Grouper were offshore in deep water, and the forecast was for the winds to pick up offshore that evening, I had to form a game plan. We would head out to a deep rock 45 miles offshore SE of the Tower and when the winds picked up we could head to the shoal area around the tower. Since the winds were supposed to be from the NW, the shoals would have a tendency to keep the seas laid out. I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!We had a good ride out, we were crusing at 31 knots and were at our first spot by 8:30AM. The current was running fairly strong and the first pass was in vain. I thought, did I make a wrong call and run all this way for nothing, then I noticed I had made a pass up current from the rock (still early in the morning, being as I was up till 3:30AM the night before and got up at 5:00AM). I repositioned the boat and crossed down current where the rock/ledge was being used as a current break. OK Chris, get on the anchor windlass, here they are!!! Down went the anchor and when it hooked up the boat swung right over top of our projected fishing hole. The usual bite started as it so often does in Grouper fishing. The feeding activity was more than they could handle. We were putting some nice bottom fish in the boat when the grouper said, "enough is enough" two small reds came aboard, then two nice reds in the 9 to14 lb. range, then a gag around 16 lbs. Now June Simmons, not to be out done, hooked up with a big fish. There were all kinds of predictions as to what it was. When it was finally boated, she had landed a 28 lb. NC Citation Jack Cravelle, YOU GO GIRL!!! Now, about this time, as we had figured, it was time to pull anchor as the seas were building out here in the deep water fast. It's time to go to calmer water, so we pulled anchor and ran the 15 miles back to the tower/shoal area. Here at the end of the shoals, the shoal had it knocked down to only 2 feet. We finished up the day here in this area and by the time we left to head home the seas were down to around 1 foot or less. Everyone had a great day of fishing with plenty of fillets for the grill!! Today we caught; Bonito's, Amorings, Black Sea Bass,2 Flounder,B-Liners(vermillion snapper) triggerfish, sharks, Jack cravelle, Joltheads, Pinkys, Grey Snapper, Red Grouper, and gag grouper. What a day of fishing we all had!!!! The report from the Gulfstream is promisingwith Yellowfin Tuna, Blackfin Tuna, and Wahoo being caught this weekend. With the mild winter we have had so far, The stream action may get off to a little earlier than usual start this year. Don't think that will make anyone mad!! As I have said before, find a day you can get out, go to the fish, and you can have a great day like this too!!!! . It sure looks like this is going to be a GREAT Fishing Season!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!!!.
FRIDAY 2-17-06: Todays charter couldn't make it due to some unexpected problems so Capt Chris and I headed offshore for a little quality time between us before the charter season kicks off full time. We were in the chase for some Black Sea Bass. We found them in small schools and we had to hit them hard and fast, here's why!! SHARKS, SHARKS, and more SHARKS. Yes, sharks, it looks as though the spiney dog sharks have made an earlier than normal apperance. If you are in the market to catch sharks, now is the time to book a trip and we will show you how to (most likely) catch all the sharks you will want to catch. At one time today, we were catching sharks two at a time, on one rod!!!!! We would get on a school of Black Sea Bass and I was watching the color scope and would tell Capt Chris when the sharks would move in. By doing this, we were able to focus more on the bass than the sharks. But we still probably boated somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty sharks today, and some we could not turn or stop before they broke the line!!! Well, the last rock we stopped on was the best!!! I was using a double drop rig and Capt Chris had on three hooks. Five at a time the Black Sea Bass came into the boat, and before the sharks had a chance to move in we had limited out on Sea Bass. They were mixed in size, we didn't get any of the jumbos like you get sometimes, but we had several two pounds plus with most in the 1 to 11/2 pound range. We had Black Sea Bass coming in the boat so fast at one time that all "Private Bodie" the fish dog could do was just stand and look, he didn't have a clue as to which one he needed to pounce on!!!! I know it's February, but the fishing is great when you can get a pretty day to get out on the water, and today was a beautiful day, light winds, warm temperature, and almost calm seas, 2 ft. or less!! Yes, you want sharks, we got'em, You want Black Sea Bass, we got'em. You want bottom fish in general, we got'em. Have not heard of where or looked for the King Mackeral. I am sure they are out there somewhere, but too much other stuff is biting right now to mess with them yet!! If you can get away to do some fishing, come on down, and you can find the fish starting about 10 miles out and beyond. If I can help you in any way, call or email, I will be glad to help you if I can!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says hi!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC.
SATURDAY 2-11-06; Today we had to call off our trip due to the winds. But I can't complain. Yesterday we started off our charter season with pretty good results. We left the dock with Fred Brown and Gary Hunt from Charlotte, they had some friends with them. They were Ben McDonald, Tony Cameron, James Williams, and Charles McNair, these guys were from Fayetteville, NC. The first stop was in the Horseshoe area, not much there!! The fish were hard to find, other boats in the area were reporting the same results. I was determined not to stop on the small schools of fish we were marking due to the difficulty of getting anchored on them in a "straight up" tide. We went to an area where the fish were reported being caught just two days prior to today, but it did not look too good so I made the decision to head 15 more miles to the SW to a rock I had found last year. Upon arriving, I was getting the feeling that this was going to be a terrible way to start the new charter season. On the approach to the rock it was dead. As it rose up off the ocean floor, dead!!! Then I started down the back side, several fishermen were looking over my shoulder at the color scope. What's that? was the reply, that is what we are looking for, I replied. Capt. Chris got a bottom rod and dropped down to make sure we were not going to anchor up on a pile of pinfish. That was a good hit, he said. Upon bringing the two pound black bass to the boat we drifted a bit more to establish an anchor course. We got the boat anchored and from that point on it was fast and furious for the next four hours. There is no telling how many big sharks were hooked and broken off. Some of them were estimated in the several hundreds of pounds. We did get two to the boat that were around 150 lbs. each. Well, when the tide went slack four hours later, and the fish went into a non feeding stage, we re-grouped, seperated the fish and when they were placed into the on board fish boxes we had a problem, there was no room for ice. Both of the fish boxes were full of some of the best eating fish in the ocean!! Yes, I would call it a fantastic way to start the new charter season!!! Even though when we started, it looked like all the fish had migrated south. But, my crew today never complained and they had the confidence in me too find them some fish today. Thanks fellows, I know you probably thought I was going to ride you around in the ocean all day on a boat ride, but sometimes you have to make the decision to leave an area to find the fish. All you guys were a real pleasure to fish with and we all had a ball!!! Now, isn't that what it's all about anyway, the fish are just an added bonus!! P.S. THE ELECTRICS ARE SERVICED, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!! Till next time, FISH ON, Capt Butch Foster, Capt Chris Foster, and Private Bodie, the fish dog, says HI!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport, NC.
Saturday 1-29-06: We left out this morning with Bluefin Tuna on our mind. But around lunch time we were fairly convinced, due to the lack of gannet bird activity and the bait was scattered, could not find any "balled up" as they do when being persued by predator fish, plus no one had hooked up all night or that morning. With all this evidence, it was an easy call to pull off and go catch a few king mackeral and some bottom fish. The grouper bite was reported real hot the first of last week, but we found the bite had slowed for us. We did find some nice black bass that we picked up while we were king fishing, could have loaded the boat with them if we had stopped and anchored up on them. It's hard to bottom fish while slow trolling for kings in 110 feet of water. But all we wanted was enough for a few fresh fish dinners!! Now, if your game is amorings, there were plenty of those to be caught also. Bonito's were schooling everywhere. If you like to catch false albacore on a fly rod, now is the time to head offshore. These fish were in big schools everywhere. Of coarse you have to take into context that the seas were flat and you could see a bait fish flip 100 yards away. The seas were as calm as I have seen it in a long time!!! The water is cold around the horseshoe and tower areas, we found warm water 68* in the 370's. The 370's, for those that don't have loran, is in the area around the "Navy wreck". This is where the kings were, they were not thick, but if you get on a school of bait, you can have a good bite. The spoon bite was decent, but it seemed like the minnow bite was a little better. Be sure to check the pictures out under the fishing report on my site. If any of you guys know how, (I don't know how), feel free to upload them on your site, it would be appreciated!! Some friends of mine went to the Gulfstream, the bite there was slow. A wahoo was caught, but the stream is not real active as of this report. But, be assured, it want be much longer until nature says it's time to migrate and when they do, they will use the stream as their "road to new grounds" and we will be there with the "toll gate" up. Keep a watch on the weather and when you get a high pressure come in and lay the winds down that's the time to go fishing!! I won't be fishing this week, I will be at the Greensboro Saltwater Show. This will be at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Be sure to come by our booth and say hi. Also, on Friday at 6:00PM we will be giving a seminar on Offshore Bottom Fishing. On Saturday we will be doing it again on Offshore Bottom Fishing at 10:00AM. Now on Sunday, at 12:00Noon, we will be doing a seminar on Gulfstream Fishing. Come on out and join in and bring your questions!!! That's about all I can think of at this time. If you have any questions or if I can help you in any way, be sure to email or call. We really do enjoy your questions and being able to help out our fellow fishermen. As I have said before, If not for all of you, what I do would be useless!!! Till next time FISH ON!!!Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog say's HI!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport, NC.
TUESDAY 1-17-06: Just got the word!!! Mike at SUPPLY BOAT COMPANY has worked overtime just to get the "YEAH RIGHT" back on the water for the Bluefin Bite we have aquired here off the Southport Beaches. Mike, what can I say? Thank you just does not seem like enough, you are a true professional and straight up guy, the boating industry could use a lot more like you!!! Hopefully this is not just a fluke, if it isin't this will be one of the greatest events too happen here in a long time!!! Fluke or not, we will now be after the Bluefins this coming weekend. Fishermen and fisherwomen, this is for real!!! You have never hooked anything like one of these powerful fish!! They have a way of destroying even the biggest and baddest of tackle!!! If you can go one on one to the finish, you can consider yourself in excellent shape with the stamina of a bodybuilder!! This is hard to believe, but I think it has finally sunk in!! Bluefin Tuna at Southport, no more having to go to Morehead, no more having to have a bigger boat to reach these fish, no more having to risk life and limb on the shoals at unfamiliar inlets, it's right here in our own back yard!!! Yes, I am excited, if this doesn't excite you then check your pulse, if you have one and your still not excited, you will need to call your local country club and get yourself a "T" time, because fishing is not your thing!!! Now is the time to catch the Biggest fish you will probably ever catch. If not the biggest, then probably the most powerful, if not the most powerful, it will be the "baddest" thing you will ever set a hook in!!! So come on to Southport,NC and let us "HOOK YOU UP"!!! FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog, says HI!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC
FRIDAY 1-6-06: There hasn't been much fishing going on this week, but, there has been some. But, before I touch base on the fishing, I'll try to remember all the up coming events and give you a run down on those. To start off with, our BOATERS WORLD SEMINARS will resume around March!!! In February, on the 25th, at VECTOR MARINE in Wilmington, will be the fishing school. The last time I talked to Gary at the FISHERMANS POST, he had a few seats left open. The price of the school is worth the chance to win an 8 ft. Menhaden Net that "YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS" will be raffleing off as a door prize. The net is being donated by our sponsor LEE FISHER NETS out of Tampa, FL. Be sure to go by and see them at the RALEIGH BASS & SALTWATER EXPO. next week and tell them we sent you by!!! We only accept sponsorship from companys we believe in, and we believe they, LEE FISHER NETS, have the finest cast nets we have ever used!!! We will have one at our booth for you to look at at the Saltwater expo. Speaking of the EXPO. that starts next Friday, January 13th. at Raleigh. Be sure to come by our booth and see Capt. Chris and myself. "PRIVATE BODIE" the fish dog will be there some also. While at the Expo. be sure to come to our seminars. We would really enjoy having you there. We will be in seminar room "B", in the Graham Building. On Friday, the 13th, at 1:00PM we will be talking about BLUE WATER, (GULFSTREAM) BIG GAME FISHING, this will cover such species as Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, Bill Fish. Now, on Saturday, the 14th. at 10:00AM, we will be talking about OFFSHORE BOTTOM FISHING. This will cover bottom fishing, how to find good places to bottom fish before you ever leave the house, Grouper Tactics, and tips on how to anchor. On Sunday, the 14th. at 12:00 noon, we will be doing the bottom fishing again just in case you can't make it on Saturday. Come on down to Raleigh and join us!!! If we are not talking on a subject you are interested in, I am sure someone there will be covering the type fishing you are interested in!!! Now, as for the fishing: The grouper are biting well about 40 miles offshore. The black bass are biting like "bulldogs on a rampage" about 20 miles out. The King Mackeral are anybodys guess right now. The water has cooled down in the Tower area, and no one has been able to get out to look for them because of the weather. The only decent day we had this week was spent on bottom and grouper!!! The speckled Trout fishing has been real good this winter!!! It should still be doing good. The Redfish fishing in the shallows is good!! Striper fishing, the last time I went, was terrible. Let me rephrase that, the trip was real nice, the catching was non-existant!! The recent rains has kept the waters dirty and as I have said before, you can catch fish in dirty water, you can catch fish in cold water, but in cold and dirty water, it's all but impossible!!! It is past time for them, but the conditions need to improve!!! Now, get a load of this, the reports are that the Bluefin Tuna are supposed to have been sighted to the East of the Tower. Also, heard of one being caught off Carolina Beach this week!! Now this is what I have been told, I do not have any hardcore evidence, but was told it came from a reliable source. They have gone somewhere though, the bite at Morehead has been off this year. Either they are all gone, been caught, or are using a different area this winter. Nothing is impossible in this fishing game!!! Would that not be awesome if we were to pick up the winter Bluefin Fishery here off of Southport!! Most likely too good to be true, but, let's keep our fingers crossed!!! The "YEAH RIGHT" has now got all new full curtains. We came up with a different idea for curtains that should stop all the spray from entering the boat. Capt. Chris and I are really excited about these curtains. We have never seen any like them, and the testing so far has proved to be great!!! We will be finishing up the routine winter maintenance today, and next week she will be going to SUPPLY MARINE in Supply to get her engines updated for the up coming season. If you have a HONDA or YAMAHA engine and need service by someone that knows these two engines and knows what he is doing, see Mike at SUPPLY MARINE. The man has impressed me with his knowledge and expertise he has shown on my HONDAS. After the first trip there, my engines were finally set up and run the way they were supposed to run!!!! Keep up the good work Mike!! As the fishing picks up, or, gets worse, you can find out about it right here. We pass on any info. we get and if we go fishing, let you know what we have done, be it good or bad!!! Posting fishing reports this time of year can be real tough, but we will do what we can when we get the reports. Hope to see you in Raleigh next weekend!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says, HI!!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, SOUTHPORT,NC.

WEDNESDAY 12-28-05: Today, Capt. Chris and I along with our friend Jason Brown from Asheboro/Holden Beach were on a mission to find the elusive winter King Mackeral that stay on the move off our coast this time of year. After a study of a water temp. chart, we determined we had about three areas to shoot for to find water in the 66-68* range. This is a relatively good temp break for winter fishing kings. Warmer, of coarse can be better, but one main factor is the presence of bait, which is not always necessary, but better, warmer water, no bait is not as good as cooler water with bait ,and vice-versa. No wonder I'm about 1/2 crazy, I'm not real sure myself what I just said, but this is what you have to factor in to find these winter fish!!! We stopped at the Frying Pan Tower, this is where they were last week. Water there was too cold. We moved off to the east. The temp there was 66*, good enough to hold kings but the scope looked like the dead sea. OK, like I said before, sometimes the temp break will hold the fish. We dropped in some baits to give it a try for a little. And things happened just as I was expecting, nothing!! Now a friend of ours left the dock this morning as we did at 5:00AM, and was going to the SW of the Tower. We had not heard anything from him so we figured he was having the same success we were having. We now were torn between two places, We could go to the other side and help Capt. Derek find some fish, or head North where the temp chart had shown some 69* water. Knowing the warmer water "should" be better, we elected to head North. We had been riding about 45 minutes when I barely heard Capt. Derek on the radio giving us a call. I could not get back to him so I checked the GPS and from where we were to where he was going was 41 miles. I told Capt. Chris and Jason he has probably found some fish, but we are now committed to our origional plan of attack!! As we headed to the North, I noticed as I moved to the North West the water was colder, so I kept moving to the NE. Here we had a "mod relief" on the chart to the NE. As I arrived at the numbers, I pulled the throttles back on the "YEAH RIGHT" and looked it over, not bad, I told Capt. Chris and Jason. Let's give this a try. In went the first bait, "FISH ON" was the almost immediate responce. "YEAH BABY" replied Capt. Chris. This is a good way to start the next years quota on the "FEDERAL KING PERMIT". The action was hot and fast, I set the "YEAH RIGHT" in a circle mode, and it was on!!! We caught a couple of boxes of kings and then, not to be greedy, anchored up on some bottom fish for the table. We picked up enough Grey Snapper, B-Liners, Black Bass, Pinky's, and Amorings for tonights dinner for our two familys and then we pulled anchor and headed back. Now, upon arrival at the "FISH HOUSE" where we sell the King Mackeral, yeah, they sell King Mackeral to the fish markets up north. They have it on a lot of restaurant menus up there, just as down here we get salmon, go figure! Guess it falls back to the old saying, "you don't want something untill you can't get it"!! But, as I was saying, we found out at the fish house that we had made a decent call, not great, but decent. That's part of this job called fishing. Yeah, I thought it was dream job too until I got into it full time. I have a whole new respect for the fishing industry, it's a tough way to make a living. You are at the mercy of the ocean and the weather, and neither one has a concience or picks favorites, and can get real angry real fast!!! In closing, the kings are still out there, the bottom fishing is good, the weather patterns are making it tough to get a day you can get out there though. But, once in a while we get a break. Just keep check on the offshore weather forecast, watch the local weather for stabilizing weather patterns and grab every opportunity and GO GET'EM!!! It is time for the striped bass to be in the river, unless they too are running late this year as everything else has done!!! As before, "it's called fishing, not catching" We will be after them this weekend, will let you know if we find them or not. Just keep check here, we will let you know how the fishing is, you may not want to hear the truth, but that is what we report, no matter how bad it hurts!!! You can see the pic's on my site!!Y'all come see us!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!! SATURDAY,12-23-05: Well, the weather decided to give us a break so Capt. Chris and I along with an old friend I had not seen in years, Eric Ross, from Pinehurst left out this morning on a southerly course in search of King Mackeral. We found some 66 degree water about 35 miles offshore with bait schools in the area. A lot of the fish that were there were too small to meet the 24 inch length limit so we released more than we were able to retain. But we were able to complete the qualification of our Federal King Mackeral Permits today, glad to have that behind us!! The King Mackeral Capt. Chris is holding in the picture was a NC Citation at 33 lbs. Now if you like to catch Bonitos, False Albacores, Boneheads, Fat Alberts, or whatever you call them, there are all you want right now offshore!!! You can spoon them or bait them, they don't care, they will accomodate you!!! The bottom fishing is doing well too. Also, be sure to check out the "BIG" shark we invited to a photo shoot before we released him!!! So, in closing, if you can get a good weather day, go for it!! The fishing offshore is good!!! Just grab a few boxes of cigar minnows and some king rigs and go have some fun. They are there waiting for you!!! It's late, I'm tired, "Private Bodie" the fish dog has already "crashed and burned" as have Capt. Chris, and I am just before doing the same!! I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. I wanted to go for black fish on a party boat but changed my mind at the last minute. Figured I try the surf with some old clams in the fridge instead. Nothing biting from 5-6:30am. But as the sun came up I had several hits in that 1 hr. period and pulled in two stripers. Worth braving the cold (35 F)

SATURDAY 12-10-05: Today we were fishing with Brian and Lynn Stevens from the Raleigh, NC area. I was not sure how things were going to materialize today, the weather station at Frying Pan was giving us a report of 6' wave height with a 5' swell. As we were heading out to do some bottom fishing on some of the inshore rocks, I checked the weather buoy again and now it reported only a 5' swell every 10 seconds with the winds switching 180*. I knew the switching winds was good for the ride back, and the wave height being absent from the report meant we only had a rolling swell. That translates into a good ride and good fishing, especially since we wanted some King Mackeral!! Now, the weather buoy is "real time data", not a prediction, so you can base your plan of attack with confidence on its report. Don't try to "second guess"it. If you are at the dock and it reports 20 knot winds and a big sea and not a leaf is moving at the dock, don't waste your time and fuel trying to go out there, it IS doing what it says!!! OK, the conditions have changed offshore, let's go King Mackeral fishing!! I pushed the throttles down and set the "YEAH RIGHT" at a good cruise of about 18 knotts, this gave us a good ride that made it hard to stay awake!! In about an hour, I pulled back to a good trolling speed and checked out the first rock/ledge, put out some baits, I told Capt. Chris, our mate again today. He put out the first cigar minnow, reached for the second rod when the first rods clicker started to scream, FISH ON!!! came the cry from the cockpit, and immediately our crew went into action, "Private Bodie" included!! This scenerio went on several more times, we put half of our King Mackeral limit into the boat before we were able to get two rods out. Finally, we were able to get three rods out and finished up our limit of Kings. Now, with our King Mackeral limit met, we were going bottom fishing. We were just starting to leave to go to the bottom when we noticed a fellow boater in distress and we responded immediately to assist. He was dead in the water and could not contact "SEA TOW" so we radioed the USCG and got them to contact "SEA TOW" and got them in route. We were going to stay with him until help arrived, but due to the kindness of the boat and crew of "MIDNIGHT WIND" they knew we had a charter and told us they would relinquish our position for us so we could complete our charter trip. I want to commend these guys, this is the way we are supposed to work together out on the water, they took over and kept the USCG updated every 30 minutes until help arrived on the scene!!! "Midnight Wind" if you EVER need any assistance on the water, the "YEAH RIGHT" is only a radio call away!!! THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!! Now, we were able to return to our fishing for today. About 2 miles away from our present position I knew of a ledge that usally had a good bottom fish population on it most of the time. We checked the tide schedule and we had about 2 hours before slack tide. Which worked out good, because we spent about 30 minutes with the disabled boat, we gave our fishermen an extra hour on their trip, I felt that was only fair!! (When the tide goes slack the fish will stop biting). Hoping the fish were there, that would give us enough time to limit out on those also. Well, THE FISH WERE THERE!!! As soon as we dropped down, the action began, and before it was time to head home, we had all the fish boxes in the boat full of triggerfish, Black Bass, B-Liners(vermillion snapper), Grey Snapper(grunts), amorings, sharks, spottails, King Mackeral, even caught false albacore and some Grouper, but they were under the legal length limit, the Grouper were, there is no limit on "boneheads". Now, that is quite an accomplishment for just two anglers, I hope they are not too sore today!! Brian and Lynn, we sure hope you two had half as much fun as Capt. Chris and I did, Thanks for the opportunity to fish with with you both!!! Another good day on the water with plenty of fish to catch and two GREAT people to share it with. Life is great!!! May GOD BLESS everyone as he has me!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog, says HI!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, Southport,NC

WEDNESDAY 12-7-05: You know, I guess when you have the fishing disease, there not only is no hope for you, but sometimes you behave in a manner that is indescribable. We, Capt. Chris and I only had an hour or two that we could go fishing so we decided to see if the black bass had made their apperance yet on the inshore ledges and rocks. There is some gray trout still around. Only one problem though, you have to GET THROUGH THE BLACK BASS TO GET TO THEM!!!!!THE SEA BASS ARE HERE!!!! Capt. Chris tied on 5 hooks and was catching them 5 at a time!!! There are some small ones out there also, just keep moving around, and you will get some good ones. Now we didn't catch any of the 4 to 5 pounders you usually get in the spring offshore, but for no longer than we had to fish, the catch was respectable, and I am sure there are some BIG BOYS out there too!!!! We would and could have caught more Black Bass but we pulled off of them trying to catch some gray trout, we did manage to get one trout out from under the Blue Fish, they are there also!!!This Saturday is predicted to be nice weather, so come on down and catch some fish!!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog, says HI!!!. YEAH RIGHT SPORTFISHING CHARTERS, SOUTHPORT,NC.

MONDAY 12-5-05; Today we were fishing with our good friend John Smith from Tennessee and his two sons John and Matthew. We were expecting to get some king mackeral before we went bottom fishing, but, the water had cooled 4* from saturday and everything was gone that was there then. The weather was not the best and with rougher conditions predicted for later that day I elected not to go any farther offshore. So, we decided to go to the bottom and light line for kings. The bottom fish were biting fair, we caught some of the biggest joltheads (knobbedhead porgys) I have ever seen. Nice triggerfish too! Several grouper and 3 limits of grey snapper. Now this sounds like a normal fishing trip, nothing could be farther from that!!!!! We were heading back to the dock and was about 18 miles out when we saw the USCG SEARCH & RESCUE HELICOPTER!!!! Capt. Chris and I said to each other, someone must be in trouble, I had the radio turned down earlier due to a bunch of noise and had forgotten to turn it back up, I noticed they were turning towards us so I turned it up, thinking they were searching for someone that looked like us and I could let them know that I had not seen anyone. Turns out they were looking for us!!!! I know now that those EPIRB units do work, mabey too good!!! This is what I and the service dept. at ACR has determined happened: On your bracket there is a magnet that holds the activation sensor in an open position, well my bracket had cracked, allowing the magnet to pull away about 1/8 inch. We came off a wave pretty hard and that triggered the unit, the unit itself was not activated, this caused it to malfunction. You may want to check you bracket on yours and make sure the magnet is AGAINST your unit with no gaps. If that magnet pulls away and your unit gets wet, it will malfunction and send a signal, and according to the service tech. at ACR, it may even go off in a high humidity situation, just be sure the magnet is still contacting your unit!!!Other than that, we had a normal good day of fishing with some GREAT GUYS!!! Ronda, you were right, they kept Capt. Chris and I laughing all day!!! By the way Ronda, your dad said he wanted us to "wear them down" catching fish, just ask them if we succeded!!! SATURDAY 12-3-05: Todays charter cancelled because the winds had blown all week, I assured him that the fish would still be offshore, but he couldn't be convinced. So Capt. Chris and his mom Barbara, and I went fishing. Yeah, I got a I went fishing, fishing report!!!! We headed the "YEAH RIGHT" south east this morning, Capt. Chris's mom and I were stretched out on a couple of bean bags in the back of the boat. Today, I was going fishing, and I thought I was going to take it easy, WRONG!!! After a quick look at a satellite imagery of the water temps. Capt. Chris was at the helm and wasn't going to back off the throttles until he hit 69* water. After about a 50 minute ride, I heard the engines start to wind down to a fast idle. 72 degrees I heard from the helm, I got up and took over the helm while Capt. Chris got the reels ready, seeing anything, he asked, yeah, it looks pretty good, I replied. We were not planning on what was to come, usually when we go on a commercial trip, we leave at daybreak. It was nearly noon, we were planning on bottom fish. I told Capt. Chris this looks like King Mackeral. Let's give it a try, said Capt. Chris. Well as the old saying goes," the rest is history"!!! Leave out of Southport,NC from where the Cape Fear River empties into the ocean, head SSE till you find 70* water, approximately 30 miles offshore, find some bait somewhere in the water column, drop in some frozen cigar minnows, and just try and see if you can get more than one rod apiece in the water. They are taking the baits as you are letting them out. The tide dropped out on us and the winds shifted to the SE, that slowed the bite late in the evening, good thing though, if they had kept on biting the way they were, we would still be there!!! As I have said before, when that "window" opens a bit, be ready to go, the opportunity gets smaller in the winter, but when you can get there, the fish are hungry!!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch Foster, Capt. Chris Foster, and "Private Bodie" the fish dog, says HI!!! SEE THE PIC'S ON MY SITE!!! YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS, SOUTHPORT,NC.

FRIDAY12-2-05: Can you believe it? It's the 2nd of December, 2005 is all but gone!!! The wind has blown most of the week, there were a couple of days it wasn't too bad but the "YEAH RIGHT" is in the shop this week getting fitted with new curtains for the up coming year. We are exploring new grounds, I have studied the wind effects and watched the side spray and Capt. Chris and I have designed a set of curtains that we believe will stop 99% of this spray and quite possibly 100 %. So, this means we have not been out this week, and have not talked to anyone who has. I did get a report of a fisherman catching 10 speckled trout yesterday. The National Weather Service has a report of decent weather for Saturday, their report at this time is for: SAT; NE winds 5 to 10 knots switching to SE later seas 2 to 4 feet near shore::::: Offshore winds variable 10 knots or less seas 3 to 4 feet::: Sunday looks bad at this point with winds predicted in the 25 to 35 knot range. The gray trout should still be around on the inshore spots as are the specks and redfish inside. I expect the black bass to be making their yearly inshore showing on the rocks and ledges in the 10 mile range. Yeah, it's winter time, but there is fish to be caught year round, just bundle up and get out there and get them. You don't stop eating in the winter, and they don't stop either!!! SATURDAY 11-26-05: We have been talking lately about the "window of opportunity" well today it was opened just enough for us and one of my long time friends, Dale Foster and his wife, Ella, from Lexington,NC to squeeze through. Headed toward the horseshoe and found the water there too cold, around 63*. Moved on to the SSE until we reached water around 100 ft. and a temperature of 68 -70 degrees. Here we found a few king mackeral and a few bottomfish. The fishing would have most likely been a little better farther offshore, but, the seas were built up enough that we decided to stick it out here. We were fishing in a stiff NNE wind and a good 5 to 6 ft. sea. But you see, Dale and I go back more years than either one of us want to admit, and from years past fishing and hunting trips, I knew he was up to the task at hand!!! Ella, his wife, hangs in there right by his side!!!! I wouldn't have called it the best weather for fishing, but anytime two old fishing friends get together, you don't let the little things ruin a good day of fishing!!!! Hang in there, one day we will have a calm day to go fishing !!! Ella, I was honored to be able to put you on your first king mackeral, and it was a good sized one to start with. Now, as for Dale, we were getting ready to call it a day, that's when it happened!! A fish hit the "light line" we had out. We don't know what it was and we never will. You see, Dale fought this fish for nearly an hour, a decision was made to tighten the drag and try to get it up because for nearly an hour had passed and by now it was getting dark and soon I was not going to be able to see the line and be able to keep the boat in position to keep the fish along side, and in the type seas we were fishing in, that was a very important part of getting this fish in. Dale had the fish at boat side many times but could not get it up!!! So the drag was increased, and it looked as though we may become victorious, then yes it happened, the rod flew up and we figured the line had broken but instead, the 4x strong treble hooks were straightened out and the hooks pulled loose. We will never know what it was, but we will always know it was the biggest thing we had on the hook in a while!!! Look at it this way, it will just be bigger the next time you have the chance to go one on one with him again, and he's still out there, waiting for the next battle, and next time, he might not be as lucky as this time!!!Capt. Chris and I really enjoyed seeing y'all again!! We had a good time, it brought back some old memories, and they were good ones!!! Keep in touch and till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. I caught Saturday night (5 Nov). I was fishing off one of the piers where I work at Saturday, just fishing for croaker basically, dropped my line straight down on the end of the pier. We werent getting anything really at all and the tide was about to turn anyhow. As I was just about to pull my line and call it a night, I got a snag. I started reeling in fast then stopped, waiting for it to pull again. The only thing that when thru my mind was I got a skate, hence the line started to head under the pier, which has happen many times before, with a pull like this. Suddenly the line started heading out toward the middle of the James, quickly I yanked and started reeling in as fast as I could. As the line shortened, the striper popped at the surface and splashed back. Realizing I didnt have a skate, I reeled it in faster and got it just above the waterline. Yelled for my son to hold the pole while I pulled it up by hand. When I got the striper on the pier, that is when I realized I had a striper, my first one ever caught..

Very chilly and windy night on the inlet. I was fishing off the Jetty on the north side of the inlet. Action was slow and no trophy fish. Live eels seem to do the best. A few small sharks came into the inlet early Saturday morning and the Stripers stopped biting-----running for cover maybe? After that the stripers were few and far between. About 4:30 PM some blues moved into the inlet followed by seagulls. Seemed to be a school of smallies though as I lost the tail to several shad lures and never hooked one. Hoping for better luck next time.

Bad start running late and dead batts. to boot. north looked good, and despite all the talk of wind, the rocks turned up a small bass with a frazzled tail. few blues-small kind. littel further north and some snags later the sea rendered a slender, (silver) striped ass basstard! somewhere along the way a 2.5 # black fish just could not resist cap'n dave's jigg'in action. it made for a windy but steady day of fishing fun. tight lines <'///><

BOSTON HARBOR-Stripers and CAPE COD BAY-School Bluefin-9/3/05 This past week the Peanut Bunker Blitz has continued in both Boston’s inner and outer harbors. The feeding forays had brought some of the most spectacular surface action of the season for both numbers of bass and big bass on light-tackle and fly gear. Offshore from the dumping grounds off Boston to the fishing ledge out to Stellwagen Bank and beyond, school bluefin between 20 and 120 pounds are hitting trolled squid rigs and casting lures on both heavy spinning gear and fly tackle. Early in the week, inshore bass charters to Boston’s outer harbor were excellent for numbers of school-sized bass between 20 and 27 inches. Surface presentation on light-spinning gear and fly tackle brought the best action. The morning blitz lasted well into the mid-morning. Keeper bass to 32 inches were common. By week’s end, the surface action in the early morning was not as extensive as earlier in the week. This made it easier to get the presentations to larger bass---the smaller fish tend to be more aggressive. On Friday, B-Fast’s BAY FLY and B-FAST fly boats found the bass early pushing the bait-fish into the coves and pockets along Boston’s outer harbor. Mark Seymour and friend from Amherst, MA had excellent fishing with both the long rod casting chartreuse half & halfs and large herring patterns and small Fin-S plastics on ½ oz jig head on the spin rods. Numbers of bass between 24 and 27 inches came over the rails to be quickly released. Bob Pike on the B-FAST was making quick work of the breaking bass using a large white gurgler. His best bass of the day slammed the gurgler and ran well into the backing before throwing the hook. During last hours of the flood in late morning, a small pod of bass surfaced. Mike Bartlett, Jr’s second cast with a Bassin’ Assassin’ rose a monster bass and we were off to the races. Mike was invited by Bob and as luck would have it, Mike’s 44 inch, 36 pound trophy proved to be our largest of the season—his personal-best at age 15. I immediately radioed Capt. Tom on the BAY FLY. By the time we revived and released Mike big bass, Capt. Tom’s anglers were double on slammers also. Unfortunately, Mark’s big fish threw the hook after a long run into the backing. Mark’s friend landed then released a 37”, 18 pound beauty. Meanwhile, on the B-Fast’s JANET B out of Brant Rock, Capt. Bob and mate Terry guided Dennis Kelly and friends from Hingham on a school bluefin charter. The anglers managed to hook six tuna casting Japanese plugs on heavy spinning gear. School bluefin were all over the surface in Cape Cod Bay feeding on sand eels. Dennis’s group landed two tuna to 30 pounds, just missing there limit of 3 for this time in the season. This fishery, like the bass fishery, should continue well into the fall as long as bait concentrations hold. Saturday’s trip with long-time client, Roger Thuot and daughter Angela from Petersham, MA was equally productive for school bass. Roger landed his best bass of the season at 37 inches and 18 pounds, out fishing his Angela for the first time in years! Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters

BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 8/21/05 Striped bass fishing in the Boston Harbor area has blown wide open due to the start of the peanut-bunker blitz. These juvenile bunker added to the young herring dropping out of the harbor rivers are producing the best surface action for fly fishing and light-tackle enthusiasts of this season. These bait fish are staging in the coves, inlets and bays in the inner-harbor, the outer-harbor and the coastline of the South Shore. On Friday, long-time fly fisher Bob Pike of Hingham, MA had a field day with breaking bass driving the peanut bunker and herring to the surface from first light through the first three hours of the flood. Acres of feeding bass were on the surface coursing though the fleeing bait-fish. The best fly pattern was a white slider (Winslow’s Afternoon Delight) fished on Wonderline. This fly has a conical foam head and is fished with a fast strip on the surface followed by an exaggerated pause. The strike usually comes on the pause. School-size bass between 24 and 27 inches were brought to net and released. Big bass were mixed in as we quickly found out. One of these 40 inch-plus monsters took off and headed for the ocean quickly dumping 75 yards of backing before we could give chase with the boat. Unfortunately, the fish wrapped a lobster line and chaffed the 20 pound fluorocarbon leader. Before the morning foray ended, a few small legal bass were landed along with the largest striper of 36 inches and 18 pounds. My thumb was raw from releasing bass! On Saturday John McNally of Rockland, MA along with his father, son Pearce and friend Rich had what proved to be the best morning of the year for both numbers of bass and numbers of big bass landed. The morning broke with an overcast sky and a light easterly wind ushering in dense fog by mid morning. As a result, the bass were crashing, non-stop on the surface from first-light until when we headed home for Cohasset. B-Fast’s BAY FLY picked up Scott Bourne of Lincoln, MA at Rowe’s Wharf and headed off to the blitz through the fog. Smokin’ shad plastics on 3/8 oz jig heads matched the bait size well and produced multiple hook-ups—at times we were tripled. Epoxy-head herring patterns on the long rod produced well also. One again, most of the bass were between 24 and 27 inches, and both Capt. Tom and I stopped counting after releasing 40 school bass. However, mixed in were some awesome keeper-size bass. On the B-FAST, seven keepers were brought to net. The largest was 40 inches and 27 pounds with others of 35-38 inches. Capt. Tom, on the BAY FLY, had similar results with one bass of 39 inches and four others between 35 and 38 inches--and the fish were still on the surface when we left for home in the pea-soup fog at 10:30! BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE-Stripers & Bluefin 8/14/05 Inshore this week, schools of juvenile herring have continued to pour out of the rivers and estuaries in both the inner and outer harbors of Boston and can be found in the coves and inlet on the South Shore. Where you find these bait fish, the stripers are concentrated. Offshore the attraction is the sand eel or sand lance. These bait fish are attracting striped bass off the Race and school tuna between 60 and 100 pounds in Cape Cod Bay, off Stellwagen and off Gloucester. Early this week, Dan Pearce, formerly from Marshfield now retired in Virginia, and John Putnam of Pembroke had a great morning fishing the bottom of the ebb through the flood in Boston’s outer harbor. Here again, the attraction for the larger stripers was the extensive shoals of juvenile herring. Soft-plastics on spinning gear and white sliders and gurglers fished on Orvis floating Wonderline brought the best action. Small, sparsely-dress chartreuse clousers matched the bait well fished on 300-400 grain DepthCharge line. 6 keepers between 30 and 35 inches can over the rails and were promptly released unharmed. Only a few school sized bass were in the mix. Late in the morning, Dan raised and hooked what we thought to be just another keeper. However, after dumping ¾ of the reel on the first run, we gave chase with the boat and netted what proved to be our largest bass of the season. This bass bottomed-out the Boga Grip at 30 pounds and was taped at 42 inches! By the weekend, the bait fish numbers were increased in both the inner and outer-harbor regions. On Sunday, Mark Roberts from Waltham, MA and his friends Bob and Joe had a banner morning with stripers coursing through the schools of juvenile herring dropping out with the ebb tide. Most of the bass were school-size fish between 24 and 27 inches. What the bass lacked in size, they made up in numbers. Multiple hook-ups were the rule, most bass rose well to surface presentations using soft plastics on light-spinning gear and gurglers on the long road. Sparsely-dressed chartreuse clousers, fished on DepthCharge line tricked a bass on almost every cast. 40+ bass were hooked and released in the three hour feeding foray—one of the best mornings of the season with bass showing on the surface. BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Striper August 6,2005 On Tuesday, August 2, we hosted, Alex Langer and his friend Steve Conely from outside Chicago. Alex is the owner and founder of National Sports Radio and hosts the show “Outdoors this Week”. As luck would have it, the stars were aligned properly and the big bass were exceptionally cooperative. After a short the run up the coast from Cohasset into Boston’s inner-harbor, these experienced freshwater bass anglers were immediately into some small, surface feeding bass and bluefish on the bottom of the flooding tide. Texas-rigged soft plastic fished on 5/0 offset worm hooks brought a number of fish to strike on the surface and ultimately to boat-side. A move to Boston’s outer-harbor on the morning flooding tide led to one of the best mornings of the season for big bass taking surface presentations. Juvenile herring are dropping out of the rivers and staging in both the inner and outer harbor bays and pockets along the coast. These juveniles will move out on the next moon (spring) tide. The big bass were moving into the shallows intercepting the shoals of young herring, and we were lucky enough to be there. “Walking the Dog” with soft-plastics was more than the cruising line-siders in 5 to 10ft could take. The first bass brought to net was a 38 inch, 21 pound beauty. Two casts later, the anglers were into a 40”, 25 pound striper that exploded on the surface and dumped half the spool before I could turn the boat and give chase. Three more keepers, two at 36 inches and one more at 38 inches were raised, hooked and released after photo-ops. Steve Conley is an avid lure designer and innovator. Although, Alex quipped that Steve fishes like a girl, his new prototype, weed-less spinner has merit. Steve attached the spinner in front of the Texas-rigged soft-plastic bait to give it more action and appeal. I was skeptical, but the 40”, 26 pound bass that followed then inhaled the innovation was not. After a quick release, Steve was back casting to see if his brain-child was a fluke or not. Evidently not, another 40”+ bass slammed the contraption, dumped half the spool and we were again off to the races. Unfortunately, the swivel split-ring failed and the prototype gave way. The right place, the right time and the right presentations made for a truly great day. . Alex featured me this on his national radio show this week. From a guide’s perspective, this is as good as it gets. I’d rather be lucky than good! Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters

A new pod of stripers has moved into the Boston area this past weekend. These fish have apparently moved in from the north and east of the harbor. On Sunday, Fred Stockman and his friend Mark Robinson, both from Milford, CT had one of the best days of the season for big stripers. Starting out at first light in the inner-harbor bays produced a mix of bass and blues. Fred went to work with his own fly pattern on the Orvis T-3, 9 weight. Mark pitched bassin’ assassins, on the surface, to the fining bass and blues. A move to the outer harbor produced the best action of the trip. Surface presentations, both on light-spinning gear and the long rod, was the ticket for the new arrivals coved with sea-lice. The last hour of the flood and the first hour of the ebb was the best tide both on Sunday and Monday. The Connecticut anglers tallied 7 keepers and numerous school bass, all taken on the surface, before the action slowed. Mark was high rod with 4 of the seven bass to 36 inches. Not to be outdone, Fred landed the pool winner of 40 inches and 20 pounds. All the bass were released after photo ops. The ledges off Cohasset proved to be slow fishing on the return trip to the Harbor. Lunch at DiNero’s in Hull added finishing touch to a great day on the water. Monday’s trip with repeat client Ken Alexander, of DeCoverly Kennels (English Setters) and his son-in-law Matthew from Scranton, PA was even better for numbers of bass taken on the surface. The bass were easy to spot on the surface due to the light south breeze. At times it was too calm, which allowed the bass to see the gurglers and assassins too clearly and only swirl at the anglers trickery. However, on the first hour of the ebb, with squadrons of fining bass moving out with the tide, their attitudes changed. Before the morning blitz ended Mark and Ken boated close to forty bass with a few blues mixed in. Four keepers to 32 inches were released. Mark took top honors for the largest fish boated. However, on the last cast of the morning Ken tricked a slammer that dumped half the spool. Unfortunately, while I turned the boat in hot pursuit, the line chaffed off on a rock. Capt. BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 6/12/05 This week’s abnormally warm weather conditions really turned on the striped bass fishing in Boston harbor and the South Shore ledges. Water temperatures in the upper reaches of estuaries have risen sharply, while out front on the ocean, the temperatures are still in the low fifties. Presently, silversides are the bait of choice in Boston’s inner harbor, and the stripers are taking great advantage of this indigenous bait-fish on both the ebb and flood tides. Robert Werme from Woodbury, CT along with his dad and his son Jordan, had a banner day with Boston Harbor stripers on Saturday. The fish showed early on the ebbing tide feeding on silversides in the inner harbor bays. Robert and his son did well with the long rod fishing chartreuse half & half on 400 grain Orvis DepthCharge line. While, 79 year old Robert Sr. worked below the surface with fin-S lures on light spinning gear. Most of the bass were between 20 and 27 inches. What the bass lacked in size they made up for in numbers. Surface activity was spectacular. Before the morning foray was over, more than fifty bass were released by the CT anglers. Four keepers were brought to the net between 30 and 35 inches. As luck would have it, Robert, Sr. took top honors with an 18 pound, 35 inch keeper. At slack low, texas-rigged, bassin’ assassin’, fished on the surface produced great strikes and some of the most exciting action of the morning. Switching to floating Wonderline and one of Straekle’s foam-head chartreuse and white poppers, Robert Jr. managed to hook and release a number of surface feeding stripers. Sunday brought great weather and John Reese from Amsterdam, NY. John, an octogenarian college literature professor, fished with me last summer on the Hawke River in Labrador for atlantic salmon. He fished tirelessly with a 7 weight T-3 and was rewarded with a number of school-size stripers. The surface action in the morning was slower than Saturday. However, from slack-low and during the flooding tide, the bass were swirling on the surface. 4 keepers to 34 inches were brought to net and released by day’s end. On B-Fast BAY FLY, Capt. Tom guided B.J. Morgan from Belmont, MA on his annual two-day striper safari. B.J. was lucky enough to land a 31 inch striper on of Capt. Tom’s eel patterns. Monday’s trip was even better for the group. With fewer boats on the water, the bass stayed on the surface much longer. 30 bass were released along with three keepers to 33 inches. Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charter

We were paying child support(knockin down undersize Strippers 6 to 10 inches, and throwing back) for an hour. I let the tide move my rig to about 20 feet off the water line. it hit very distinctly three times and I set the hook on the third bounce. I knew it was a larger fish due to the line direction changing rapidly. But due to the Stergeon Rig and the 50 lb test I really couldn't tell how big it was, until it got to the dock and due to the low tide I had all the people on the dock assisting. My daughter went to a gent down the way and got a net which was just long enough to get the fish up if one of the taller of my fellow fishermen layed on the dock and another held his belt to keep him from going over. This fish ends a curse to the Clarke family in that I caught this fish ending a 35 year dry spell. I,ve been fishing those waters since I was a child with my father. I was glad that I could share this experience with my 11 year old Daughter, who was fishing her Great Grandfathers pole and on her first trip to the Montazuma Sloughs.

02/26/05 (date on pictures was off by one day) Capt. Chris and I picked up Don and Jody at South Harbour Marina today, saturday, at 11:00 for a 1/2 day fishing trip for bottom fishing. The wind was from the NE at a steady clip and we figured we would be blown out. But suprisingly we found the seas rather calm inside. Only problem was the water temp. was 48* and my hopes of finding any good black bass in this close to shore was not too good. Well over the years I have loged some spots in close that I haven't tried in several years. Well, sharks, sharks , sharks, and I mean sharks were everywhere!!! But finally I fine-tuned the boat on one spot, dropped anchor and kept moving the boat up a few feet at a time with the windlass until "bingo" we were pulling in keeper black bass two at a time. It didn't take long till we had two limits of bass in the box. Another GREAT day of saltwater fishing!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!!! Capt. Butch & Capt. Chris Foster.

Fished off the surf just a couple hours a day with my kids (daughter 6, son 14). Everyone was catching fish. Hit every 10-15 minutes with lots of fight from some of the larger blues. The surf was very rough and casting was a challenge. In fact, we caught a pelican as well. Long story short, freed the bird and saved the rig too. So many blues, so little time. Our location was just South of the Indian River Inlet in Delaware. Spoke with numerous fisherman that caught stripers in the Inlet mouth using eels and clams.

We started at around 8:15pm, wasn't any action until around 10:00pm. After that they were hitting like crazy! We were using sand eels at first with minimal success and switched to the live eels once we got a few hits. Caught 9 Striped bass in all, the smallest was 24 inches and the largest was 38. All together there were 6 "keepers" and 3 non-keepers. The water was very clean up to around 12:30am when the sea weed started rolling in. I am told that late September into October is very active here and I plan on returning then! Good luck all!

As long as you had a white perch on and pitched it in the "Hole", you got a nice run. Longest time for a strike was 17 minutes, most of the time it was within 2 minutes. All fish were released healthy. We were using 6/0 circle hooks and all fish were lip hooked. Just a fantastic day. One strike on a popper, one strike on a 5 inch bass assassin. Rest were on live perch.

Forgive me on account Im a midwesterner we dont have salt to fish in. Anyway, we just drift fish while bouncing off the bottom and had good luck when we switched baits from shad to skip jack. We use stout bass fishing tackle and they are fun to catch. Water levels vary so much there that its hard to say what the depth would be if you go. They say november is a better time to fish here or late october we are going back then to try again. Wish us luck - Peace

On Tuesday, I caught 3 fish over 20" (biggest 24") which was the first time this year I saw a fish over 20". Then on Thursday and yesterday morning the big ones arrived. Three fish over 30" landed. Yesterday afternoon, after the thunderstorm, I went down off the rocks where I live and fish were bustin bait! Not alot of them but one small pod kept pushing bait around right in front of me for about half an hour. First time this year I've seen busting fish. What a sight. I recorded that I caught 30 but honestly I have no idea exactly how many I caught. I don't keep track.

Was told by local bait store that it has been slow all week. Don't know why, saw 2 schools of blues about 400yds out feeding and when the dog's left the bait alone long enough the blues were there. Caught 16 dogs up to 40" and some of them had fresh bite marks on them from the blues (i guess). Good news only one skate. Bad news no stripers.
