Mustad 9175 - 3X strong "tail" hooks and rigging hooks These are closed eyed hooks, short shank. Very strong hooks that hold an excellent point. They make great tail hooks for rigging eels - rubber or real eels. They also make great replacement hooks for the rear of plugs - either plain or with bucktail or even hackles. These are the same hooks that Gibbs uses on the rear of their plugs that feature a single tail hook. Model 7794B 3X Replacement Treble Hooks - These are the strongest Mustad replacement trebles that we've found. The #2's are perfect for small Mambos, MegaBaits, Yozuri, Red Fins, 4" Bombers, and similar sized lures. The #1's are standard 6" Bombers, 6" MegaBaits, bigger Yozuri's and other similar sized plugs. The 1/0's are for 6" Bombers and MegaBaits when you want to leave the middle hook off and other similar sized lures. Model 35517 3X Open Eye Replacement Treble Hooks - Open eyed 3X strong trebles. These are the hooks that come standard on most quality wooden lures. Excellent for all manner of plugs that don't have split rings. Very strong hooks that hold an excellent point when sharpened. They require pliers to close them on the swivel or hook hanger and when closed properly are very strong! Eagle Claw 774BKU 4X Black Trebles - Very high quality 4X treble hooks. They don't rust easily, they don't need sharpening, they are a pearl black in color and are super strong. Best part, they cost 1/4 what the other 4X alternatives cost! I replaced every treble hook on most of my smaller plugs with these and haven't looked back. After fishing the entire fall, catching loads fish on them, not one bent hook nor one complaint. At the end of the season, not one bit of rust on even one of the hooks! Sampo/Rosco Duolock Snaps - In black only, unless I start getting lots of request for stainless...never liked having shiny stainless hardware any where on a rig, it's just an invitation for bluefish to nip off your stuff! These Sampo Duolock snaps are the ones we've relied on for years, they are light and easy to operate. The #54's are rated for 50#s and the #53's are rated for 40#. SPRO Swivels - just added the 130#! The tiniest swivels of substantial strength that we've ever seen. Berkley Cross-Lok Snaps - Added size 9 snaps! Again, black only unless popular demand dictates otherwise. By design, they won't open on a straight pull and are made of very solid wire. Stronger by size than Duolock Snaps. And it says right on the package "Catch more fish" so I guess we gotta carry them! ;-) These snaps are rated stronger for their physical size than most others, the 60# strength #3 is smaller than the 40# Duolock Snaps. Absolutely the strongest split rings that we've ever come across! Stainless, they won't rust. Extra strong, they won't open. We have them in sizes 2, 2 1/2, 3, 4, 5, 5 1/2, 6, and 6 1/2...all in extra heavy...all in stainless steel. Sizes 2 and 2 1/2 for the smallest of plugs. The size 3 would be for all plugs smaller than 6" bombers such as the smaller MegaBaits, smaller bombers, Yozuri's, etc. The 4, 5, 5 1/2 is perfect for 6" bombers, 6" MegaBaits...and the 7" versions of the same and similar sized creations. The 6 or 6 1/2 is for lures on which you need to be absolutely positive that the split ring will never open...not even if you are trying to stop a freight train. Both the 5 1/2, 6, and 6 1/2 would be ideal for replacing open-eye hooks on the bigger wooden plugs. Made of heavier wire than the other brands...but still sized properly.

These are the best split ring pliers we can find, made by Sampo. They are the same ones you can buy from Cabelas for over $20. I've changed the hooks on hundreds and hundreds of plugs and am still on my original pair. I've found them so necessary with the x-heavy split rings that I now carry a pair in my fishing vest so I can quickly change hooks while fishing. Get a pair, they'll last forever.

Model 34007 -Forged, ringed, stainless steel. These are the most popular, affordable stainless steel hooks for tying flies and teasers. For saltwater teaser, generally size 1/0-4/0, exceptions on both ends. For flies, it depends on a few things. Bait size, total fly length, size of the potential fish, and the line weight all come to mind...there are others! Most saltwater flies are tied on sizes 1 through 3/0, again, exceptions on both ends. I've tied them and caught stripers on all sizes from 8 to 6/0...I've never tied on the 7/0, it's a monster!

The second most popular hook is Mustad's 34011. It's also stainless, but has a long shank, 3/8" longer according to Mustad. We use them for tying anything that I want long without the added weight of going up a couple hook sizes. They are great for sand eel, long baitfish patterns, poppers, and sliders. Due to physics beyond our control, longer shanked hooks will open easier than shorter shanked hooks in the same size. We rarely use 34011 hooks or any long shanked hook in sizes under #1 unless a very specific need arises!

These are the tail hooks we'd recommend for rigging real eels. They are used in the tail portion of the rigging process when rigging them with tin squids. They are also excellent hooks for fishing live eels and live lining any type of live bait like herring, bunker, mackerel, or mullet. The hooks are black, extremely strong, and dangerously sharp.
