Two types here, northern deer tails and
saltwater/big game deer tails. The saltwater tails have hair that is 4" or
longer for those long flies and jigs. Saltwater tails are just generally bigger
tails than the northern tails...more usable hair. Tough call, they are more
expensive, but you get longer hair and usually, more of it. I use the "regular"
ones for most bucktail jigs, the longer haired ones for bigger jigs and long
flies. The northern tails are the ones you'll find in most fly shops for $6 each, the saltwater length tails I've seen in stores for $8 or more!

Strung Saltwater Saddle Hackles 6"-8" - These are the hackles that we use to tie the majority of our hackle flies. We find about 10%-20% of them have a twist in the stem at some point, usually towards the base. That's why we choose 6-8" hackles, most flies call for 4" or less hackle length...so almost 100% of the feathers are used...most store bought strung hackles are about 50% wasted! We'll put aside all the ones that are perfect for their entire length and save them for really long flies! I've seen the exact same feathers in fly shops for $40/ounce or more...they are $17/ounce here! |

Zap-A-Gap - Here it is, the end all of cyanoacrylate based glues. We use this stuff for tying flies and jigs...fixing lures and reels...and for keeping rubber/plastic baits on hooks and jigs. It can be used to glue almost anything around the house, the tying bench, and especially while fishing! It comes in a super thin penetrating formula known as "CA" and a thicker, gap filling formula known as "CA+". They both certainly have their uses! |

Yak Hair -The most amazing extra long material I've ever seen! This is the nearest thing I've seen to the now illegal polar bear hair, at least in textures and translucency....this hair is much longer! It's brilliantly clear even though the colors are are surprisingly rich. This is the good stuff for you guys that would like to make big long flies, it's 14" - 15" long! The hair is solid, not hollow like bucktail, so it doesn't absorb much water and casts very well. If you haven't seen this yak hair, you really need to, it will open lots of doors for your fly tying. |
