Gibbs Danny Deep Diver - Just got sandeel and parrot in today 2/11/07! A true classic, the Danny plug has been around longer than most of us ;-) The deep diving Danny is the answer to a wooden plug that fishes about 1ft down at a striper retrieve. These are 1 1/4oz and cast very well. They have an almost darter like swing to their wiggle - and the fish both locally and in Rhode Island (the only two places I've tried them!) have shown their approval. A great plug when you want the wide profile of a bunker, mullet, or herring - yet you want to fish slightly subsurface. In a rip or fair current, they'll fish 2-4ft down at striper speed. Another unique thing about the deep diving Danny is that it won't roll up in a wave or pop out of a strong current. A definite necessity for a well rounded surf bag - a niche filling lure that has no equal that I'm aware of. The best way to work them is just like you would any plastic swimming plug - slow and steady with an occasional twitch. You can also start a quick retrieve to get the plug down a couple feet and then slow down to keep it at that depth. As with most floating plugs, a twitch/pause combination can sometimes trigger a vicious attack from an otherwise cautious fish! As always, keep your hooks sharp! Carefully revive and release any fish that you aren't planning to eat, they are a precious resource that is under tremendous pressure right now. |
