![]() Shown here: Gibb's 1 5/8oz Darters - black scale, sandeel, parrot, blue/white, solid black, and white. (Not shown in yellow, pink/pearl, pearl w/ pink stripe, or black-n-purple) **The 2 1/2oz are identical...only the plugs are bigger ;-) | There are many wooden plug makers out there, some good, some bad, some unbelievably talented...but no one makes a wooden bottle plug or wooden darter like the fellas at Gibb's. The bottle plug was my first introduction to wooden lures many years ago...I doubted it's usefulness immediately...in my (young) eyes, I thought it looked little like an actual bait fish and was certain the more realistic Bombers that I'd been throwing forever would out fish this odd shaped wooden thing! Boy was I wrong. These things are made to get way out and to hang tough in even the fastest rips and most violent surf...something a bomber just wasn't built to do. Being wide bodied with a large profile makes these a great imitation of all the bigger baits - bunker, herring, mackerel, squid, mullet, baby anything. We will carry these plugs here as they are indeed unique and necessary if you ever need to reach way out into a steaming rip or churned up surf...there's just nothing else that does the job like these. The darters will get deep and hang tough in any rip! Darters are one of the most important lures carried by the guys that fish Montauk...they are also very important for any rips, inlets, or places where the current is generally too much for normal lipped swimming plugs. The five custom colors here - black scale, parrot, dark green/silver, black/purple, and pink/pearl are all colors that we've wished Gibbs made for all the times throwing darters but felt the stock colors didn't quite fit the conditions. Without a doubt, these custom colors have become some of the biggest producers of all the Gibbs products sold at StripersOnline! Darters are best fished either up and across or down and across, with a quick pop to get them started. Depending on the current, they can either be reeled across the current or allowed to wiggle on a tight line as the current sweeps them. Like a bottle plug, and occasional pop and pause will often trigger a vicious hit! **It's fall...make it a point to throw darters instead of poppers once in a while.... you will be impressed with the size of the fish the darters will interest! Fish them slow, just enough to keep them under water - they are amazing fish catching plugs - they don't look like fish, they aren't holographic funky ...but big fish eat them regularly :-) |
