- Whiplash and new Spiderwire Stealth-

Whiplash quickly became our preferred braid last year. It's thinner than all other braids with the exception of RipCord Si, but that line is flat so diameter can be deceiving. This line is the best behaved of all the super braids we've used...and we've used almost everyone! Braids have been on our spools since long before they were made for fishing, we used spectra kite string long ago, but it was never available in these sizes, or for these prices!
Berkley just introduced Spiderwire Stealth as Whiplash has been discontinued for well over a year. We're told that the new Spiderwire Stealth line is really Whiplash with a Teflon impregnation - not a coating of the finished line that will come off. The line is round and will stay round on your spool. It's got a little more body than Whiplash which will help discourage the dreaded loop of line of the spool that results in a nasty knot on the next cast. I've yet to use this new line but am looking forward to it.

Spider Wire Stealth
Spiderwire Stealth is available in 10#, 20#, 30#, 50# and 65# in yellow or green in 300yd spools or 1500yd bulk spools.

The good news is Spiderwire Stealth!

It's like Whiplash treated with Teflon - not a coating that will come off like other braids, but processed into the braid. As sad as we are to see Whiplash quickly running out forever, Spiderwire Stealth is already quickly easing the pain as more and more guys are falling in love with the unique properties of this newest braid!

Stealth is available here in 10#, 20#, 30#, 50# and 65# - in 150yd, 300yd and 1500yd spools
- and in low-vis green or high-vis yellow :-)
(**150yd spools only for 10# and 20# but in yellow or green)

Prices starting at $12.39!

Here's what Berkley has to say about Whiplash!

The Superline category.
In the early '90s, introduction of gel-spun fibers slowly entered the fishing line market, creating a new category called Superlines.

The early superlines were all braided lines, an age-old technology that was "available" to this new-age, high tech fiber. Anglers that originally got caught up in the hype and experimented with the braided superlines soon became frustrated with low knot strength, backlashes, lost lures, poor (if any) coloration, damaged equipment, impossible snags, and more. For most anglers, these disadvantages quickly outweighed the benefits of strength, micro diameter and ultra sensitivity, particularly considering the exorbitant costs. Superlines were left to find their niches among anglers for specific applications. And they did.

Gel-spun technology advances, replacing braided superlines.
In attempts to meet the needs of anglers, makers of superlines have made continual advances and improvements to the raw material fibers, and the processes that convert them into fishing line. Coloration, castability and strength have all been improved, overcoming some of the early disadvantages. Berkley® scientists have led the way, resulting in the most advanced and superior superline in its class, Berkley FireLine®. Yet, many anglers who adapted to the braided superlines early on still choose these over FireLine, particularly in the larger sizes.

Why the need for another braided superline?
Anglers that are satisfied with the braided superlines find several advantages over FireLine. Two overwhelming factors are price and flexibility. Saltwater anglers use most of the braided superlines and spool large quantities on large reels. Sometimes, the line is used as a backing for mono, allowing anglers to use smaller reels and increase the line capacity. Price is a factor here. Also, FireLine in larger sizes is stiffer. Saltwater anglers prefer the softness of the braid for vertical jigging and trolling.

Other braided superlines have not advanced their processing technology to the level that Berkley has, so Berkley decided to offer a better super braid.

How is Whiplash different from other braided superlines?
Whiplash is superior for several reasons:
  • Made from Micro Dyneema®, which is the strongest gel-spun polyethylene in the world. Micro Dyneema is 40% stronger than Spectra, and 20% stronger than Spectra 2000. Berkley is the exclusive processor of Micro Dyneema for fishing lines in the world.
  • Advanced coloration. Whiplash is colored with proprietary technology far superior to any other braided super line. Whiplash is colored directly into the fibers, not coated with alternate materials to obtain color or "smoothness", such as T.U.F.F. Plus®, Power Pro®, Spiderwire®, Fusion®, even Berkley Gorilla Braid or Ultra Max. Thus, Whiplash is more colorfast, thinner in diameter, and "cleaner" to fish with since it has no coating to flake or wear off.
  • Tight weave braid. Whiplash is processed differently than traditional braids, giving it a tighter, smoother braid, making it easier to cast and tie stronger knots. It is less likely to "dig" into reels and creates less friction through rod and reel guides.
  • More fibers for better performance. Whiplash uses more fiber bundles when braiding, contributing to the performance and knot strength.
  • Smaller diameter. Whiplash has a thinner diameter than competitive brands, increasing the reel capacity and casting distance.
What other advantages does Whiplash offer?
Whiplash is made from 100% gel-spun fibers, giving it all the advantages of a superline.
  • Incredible strength-to-diameter ratio. Whiplash is up to 5 times thinner than nylon monofilaments for the same breaking strength. This offers anglers better casting distance and lure action. Lures dive deeper and faster with Whiplash and it is less visible to fish. Anglers can spool more line on their reels.
  • Superior sensitivity. Whiplash has very little stretch, transmitting all bumps, ticks and strikes instantly to the rod tip and reel. This provides more instant and positive hook sets.
Where is Whiplash best applicable?
Whiplash is designed and offered in sizes 20 through 200 lb for big game fishing. Best suited for baitcast reels, Whiplash is ideal for all saltwater species when trolling, deep water jigging or live bait fishing. Whiplash is an excellent substitute for nylon and polyester braided lines for muskie, large pike or giant catfish. It can handle large crankbaits or heavy jigs or sinkers.

What should anglers be aware of?
  • Whiplash, like other superlines, requires a palomar knot for best results (instructions for tying the palomar knot are in each box of Whiplash, or consult your local dealer).
  • Spool reels with mono backing before spooling Whiplash. This prevents the line from "slipping" on the reel and conserves line. It also adds firmness to the spool for better casting and less backlashes. Tie a Uni to Uni knot to connect to the mono.
  • Do not overfill reels. Overfilling creates loose strands after a cast and more backlashes. Fill to within 1/8" of spool rim.
